The Power of Love

Love is what keeps Gatsby going. His hopes and dreams are love. That is all he ever wanted. The article 'The Power of Love' gives explanations about just how powerful love can be. When someone feels love they are emotionally and physically healthy. Love can also cause depression because when someone feels unloved they become depressed. Love can make a person take extraordinary measures to receive it. Gatsby can relate to this, he came from nothing; he worked hard and became successful. He moved to one of the most prestigious neighborhoods in the country. He had one of the most illustrious, extravagant houses anyone has ever seen. He threw huge parties every night, but this wasn't for him. It was for love. Gatsby did all of this just so he could regain something he'd lost, Daisy's love. He was lost without it. Which is why he did the things he did in order to get it back. Gatsby felt depressed and alone without knowing someone loved him. This relates back to the article when it says love can cause major depression. Daisy's love was Gatsby's reason for living, his only dream. Without love Gatsby was nothing, with it he was everything.

Response to "What Is the 'American Dream'?"

I agree with your take on the American Dream. No matter where someone comes from there's always an opportunity to succeed. I also agree with your statement about how some people have many opportunities, but in the end still fail. Some people want success more than others and it doesn't matter how many opportunities someone gets. Success to me means doing what you love to do. It doesn't matter if your rich and famous, if you do something you love then you're living the "American Dream". I've also heard about many stories where people with work their way from the bottom and go on to lead successful lives. And it usually is through sports. There are a lot of athletes who come nothing with no opportunities except through sports. Most take advantage of the opportunity they are given, and go on to be successful. There are a lot of kids in the projects of New York, and the only opportunity they have to get out is sports, mainly basketball. They seize that opportunity and make something out of nothing. That to me is what the American Dream is all about, becoming successful even if there aren’t many opportunities to do so.

Gatsby's Theme Song

Gatsby has an obsession with love, and not just anyone's love but Daisy's love. Everything he does is for Daisy. I think the song “What I Got”, by Sublime, represents Gatsby and his obsession of love. “What I Got” talks about how love is all anyone has. Love is something you can rely on. This is perfect for Gatsby because love is all he cares about. After Gatsby left for the war and lost Daisy's love, everything he has done since has been to regain it. He became rich, bought a house right across the lake from Daisy, and threw huge parties in an effort to lure her back to him. After arranging a surprise meeting with Daisy he finally achieves her love. He nearly achieved his lifelong dream of marrying her, but was stopped short of an unexpected event. There’s a line in “What I Got” that says “Love’s what I got, It’s within my reach”. This line to me relates to Gatsby’s situation almost exactly. Daisy’s love is within his reach, all he has to do is prove he is worthy of it. The chorus of “What I Got” repeats the line “Lovin’ is what I got, I said remember that”. Love is all Gatsby has, remember that.

The American Dream

The American Dream means something different to everyone. I think it’s the freedom that we have as Americans. Other countries around the world have corrupt governments that violate their citizen’s rights, but here in America we don't have to worry about corruption or violations of our rights. This is why America attracts so many immigrants. They don’t have the freedom we do so they move here in order to obtain it. I think that the American Dream to them is just having this freedom, I agree with this, but I think there is a little more to it. The American Dream to me is succeeding. Using the freedom that we are given and using it to live a successful life. I don't mean being rich and glamorous, but simply doing something you love for your entire life. We have the freedom to become whatever we want. If it's owning a small business or flying planes, we as American citizens have the right to choose. This is what the American Dream is all about, having the freedom to achieve something you wouldn't be able to. This is what I think the American Dream is, and like I said it means something different to everyone.

What Is the "American Dream"?

I belive that the American Dream is the idea that anyone of any race or gender in the United States can live a happy and successful life as long as they work hard. I believe that anyone can achieve a happy life as long as they work hard. It does not matter what background they come from. I often hear stories about children that were brought up in complete poverty rise out and become someone much happier. This can also work in the other direction. A child could be brought up in a wealthy family and have all the opportunity in the world but end up failing out of college and work at a minimum pay job that they don’t want and be completely unsatisfied. This is essential in the way I live my life. I work hard in everything I do whether it is sports or school. School comes first. I put almost all of my time into my studies so I can do whatever I want when I grow up. When im not doing my schoolwork I am practicing my favorite activity, hockey. I work hard now so I will be happy and satisfied with my self when I get older.

Jazz Age

The Great Gatsby is set during the 1920’s which were also known as the Jazz Age. This was marked by the end of the First World War and lasted the majority of the 20's. The young began to separate themselves by introducing new styles and attitudes. New hair and clothing were just a few of the fads that the Jazz Age saw. The focal point of the Jazz Age was of course the introduction of Jazz music. Many Jazz artists emerged and the popularity of Jazz increased dramatically. This was due to new large scale radio broadcasts which enabled people to listen to music at home. Joe Oliver, Edward Ory, and Louis Armstrong all rose to fame during this period of time. The Jazz Age was the time where large parties and nightclubs could be found in abundance. It was a time for celebrating because the First World War was finally over. These good times lasted for almost a decade until the Great Depression struck. During the Jazz Age people felt freer than ever. This freedom led to the new fashions and good feelings, combined with the introduction of Jazz the Roaring 20’s made its mark on American history.

Book Banning and Burning

Last week I listened to a presentation given by Mrs. Grimble about the banning and burning of books. When she was working as a librarian in Warsaw, Indiana, there was a large-scale book burning. A committee marched into the Warsaw library and took books, that they thought were inappropriate, off the shelves and out of the library. They proceeded to burn every copy of every book they took. They said that it was in the peoples best interest. They did what they thought was right, not what other people thought was right. They then went back and banned other books, just for having drug references or vulgar language. This is censorship and it is a violation of our rights. Censorship doesn't only happen with books it happens in activities we do every day. Every year new books are banned from being read. Books are meant to be read and just because they have bad language or references does not mean they should be hidden from everyone. Censoring books is wrong, authors have the right to write about whatever they want, and people have the right to read whatever they want. Just because someone else thinks that a book is inappropriate doesn't mean that every copy of that book should be taken away and concealed. Books are for reading and they should stay that way.
