Over the past centuries, remains of many hundreds of people--men, women, and children--have come to light during peat cutting activities in northwestern Europe, especially in Ireland, Great Britain, the Netherlands, northern Germany, and Denmark.

This Archaeology Magazine provides a brief overview of what a bog body actually is as well as separate passages discussing pathologies of the bog bodies, clothing and hair styles, violence in the bogs, and reconstructions of what the people might have looked like while they were still alive.

A 4,000-year-old body from the peat of central Ireland is likely to be the world's oldest bog body.
Hannah Exum's insight:

A BBC News article reveals the violent  past of the world's oldest bog body. Cashel Man, a 4,000 year old corpse found preserved in a bog in Ireland, is thought to be the oldest bog body found. After examination, it was discovered that Cashel suffered significant violent injuries to his back, and his arm shows evidence of a cut from a sword or axe. Due to the location of Cashel Man's body and the injuries he sustained, some archaeologists believe that he may be a sacrificed Irish King.

Tales from the Bog, Bog Bodies - Using CT scans and radiocarbon dating, investigators hope to make sense of the bodies preserved in Europe�s wetlands.
Hannah Exum's insight:

A National Geographic article describes the discovery of Tollund Man, a 2,300 year body preserved in a Danish bog. Tollund man was found naked, his body bearing obvious signs of violence. This body, although extremely well preserved, still leaves many questions unanswered. It is hard to say why this man died, some archaeologists suggest he was a victim of a sacrificial ritual. This is a plausible theory although it cannot be proved since Iron age Europeans did not leave a written record of their beliefs and customs.
