In late 1966, Bob Dylan had been a huge public figure and basically the voice of a generation. His music was extremely accessible and easy to relate to. Because of his quickly-grown fame and possibly other factors he gradually became turned on to drugs and the drugs he was using progressively became more and more self-destructive. Soon after the release of Blonde on Blonde and the 1966 tour he got into a motorcycle accident. His opinions and his voice then became less public and he stopped using drugs. He came out with two albums which were much quieter (John Wesley Harding and Nashville Skyline).

Bob Dylan Like a Rolling Stone 1966 live

In 1965, inspired by The Beatles and others, Bob Dylan went electric and was then hated by some and loved by many. A lot of his fans were purists and believed that he was becoming too "poppy" instead of sticking to his folk roots. He proved them wrong by generating 3 of what are arguably the best rock albums ever made (Bringing it All Back Home, Highway 61 Revisited, and Blonde on Blonde).
