Brainwallet - Bitcoin

Brainwallet - Bitcoin | Bitcoin | Scoop.it
Gregg Cooke's insight:

The intersting thing about a brainwallet is that, if you choose a passphrase properly, it cannot be taken away from you by anyone, not even a government.  This completely destroys the law enforcement practice of tracking criminal funds (or blocking funds they don't agree with).

Something to consider: "mining bitcoins" is a misnomer -- it's not at all about digging in some virtual quarry for shiny new bitcoins, but really "mining for transaction validity", and then bitcoins get awarded as payment for doing that work. The goal of the mining is to validate the transaction -- you can see that in the diagram above.

Bitcoin developer talks regulation, open source and the elusive Satoshi Nakamoto | PCWorld

With Bitcoin all the rage and startups popping up left and right, it's hard to know who's an expert in the virtual currency and who just has an opinion. Most people would put Jeff Garzik in the former camp.

Gregg Cooke's comment, May 19, 2013 5:16 PM
Garzik's one important point is that the Mt. Gox seizure was all about regulation and it'll blow over soon. He's referring to the fact that none of the BTC exchanges is registered with FinCEN, the crime fighting department. The fact that Mt. Gox is down but the others are not means that there is a race amongst ALL exchanges to get registered right now...the first to do so that is not Mt. Gox will dominate the U.S. market (because 80% of that market is with Mt. Gox at the moment).

Bitcointip

Bitcointip | Bitcoin | Scoop.it
reddit: the front page of the internet
Gregg Cooke's insight:

OK, let me explain this..."+bitcointip" is a command in the Reddit universe that allows people with Bitcoins to exchange them with each other.  It is the digital equivalent of handing a tip to someone who's service you liked -- although it can, of course, go much further than that.  Note that this isn't quite a "digital bazaar" because there's nothing here to help with the exchange of goods, or to guarantee immediate delivery (of a good or a service) -- this is just people handing money to each other.  Bitcointip is a step in the evolution of a crypto-currency economy.

It is hard for people to understand that criminal behavior is often a strong driver of new technology. It was necessary for Bitcoin to get off the ground by providing a haven for drug dealers and stolen credit card numbers in order to bootstrap it's exchange with enough flow to stand up. Once Bitcoin is strong, the criminal element can be eliminated...to an extent. There will always be some degree of criminality wherever anonymous transactions are allowed to happen, and a society cannot be healthy without anonymous transactions.

Upshot: Paypal's draconian anti-fraud policies can have a huge negative impact on businesses (which was one reason for Bitcoin's existence in the first place) -- Bitcoin's nearly-impossible-to-defraud nature may solve that problem for Paypal.

The idea that Bitcoin should be regulated is frightening to me..Congress can't figure out how to use their own smartphones and we want them to understand something as complicated as digital currency?? There will be tears before this story is done....

On the flip side, I agree with this article that Bitcoin will be a good thing for the common man because it will insulate people from currency swings of their national currency and the world markets. However, BTC has to stabilize first, and that will only come with scale and speed. With a cap of 21M Bitcoins, it may never achieve stability.

Gregg Cooke's comment, May 19, 2013 5:32 PM
Bremmer doesn't completely understand Bitcoin when he points at the insecurity of digital wallets as a weakness -- wallets really have little to do with the long-term health of Bitcoin. Online wallets are a silly idea because they do not exists under your control...but they were the first because they're easy to use. Offline wallets will be the norm -- and they're getting built (Trezor is an example of a keyfob-style wallet, and VisualBTC is an air-gapped wallet that uses QR codes).

Ahhh...the march of the wallets has begun! This is a pretty good idea, in fact: it "air gaps" your wallet from the net so it is impossible for anyone to steal your Bitcoins.
