Biology Biological Cells Essays -- Plant And Animal Cells

Biology Biological Cells Essays - Plant And Animal Cells
Amanda's insight:

This is a good example for students when writing a lab report or research paper. Writing scientific papers is very difficult for students, especially when they are used to writing more eloquantly in English. It takes practice and reading many examples of papers and reports to adopt the concise way in which scientists write.

Untitled 1 | Biology | Scoop.it
Amanda's insight:

This website outlines the structures of cells. My favorite part about the site is describing the cell as a "city" and the organelles as structures you would see in a city, such as power plants and highways. The use of this analogy helps students see visualize functions and relationships of the organelles in terms with which they are already familiar.

BioScope - Major Cell Discovery Timeline

BioScope - Major Cell Discovery Timeline | Biology | Scoop.it
Amanda's insight:

This is an interactive site that highlights the major discoveries regarding cells. I like the simlicity of the timeline and how the students can select each scientist for more detail. More importantly, the students are asked open-ended questions that require some critical thinking about the timing and results of the discoveries.

From Stem Cell to Any Cell

From Stem Cell to Any Cell | Biology | Scoop.it
The search is on for ways to use stem cells to treat injuries and cure diseases.
Amanda's insight:

This is an excellent article for introducing the stem cell debate. It is very age-appropriate and relevant to the current issues revolving stem cell research. Students can openly discuss both sides as well as their own opinions.

Amanda's insight:

This is the textbook used in many high school biology classrooms (including my student teaching classroom). It provides very detailed information about cell structures and their functions. It is probably the most informative resource, but students usually have difficulties visualizing and relating what they learn.

View to a cell | Genes & Cells | Science News | Biology | Scoop.it
Amanda's insight:

In this article, students can be reminded of how far technology has come in the last few decades, especially in the field of microscopy. They can view images of cells taken with modern optical techniques and compare them to older techniques to see the immense difference in quality.

Types of cells in human body & their functions

Types of cells in human body are quite few. They have different roles in their function and support to the body..
Amanda's insight:

This article describes the different types of cells that can be found in the human body based on either their function or the types of tissue in which they can be found. Cell differentiation can be difficult to understand, so students usually assume all cells are identical when in fact, they have different shapes and structures according to their types.

The Virtual Cell Textbook - Cell Biology

The Virtual Cell Textbook - Cell Biology | Biology | Scoop.it
Amanda's insight:

This is a great website with a virtual tour of the cell structures. The images are colorful, and the animations help students visualize functions. Being able to zoom into each structure shows the detail and specifics of the organelles. Students can use this as a study guide or for extra understanding.

Cell Structure and Function: Introduction

Amanda's insight:

This interactive website is a great resource for reviewing what students have learned about cell structures and functions. It provides practice with vocabulary and self-quizzes to evaluate understanding. It does not go into too much detail, but it is adequate for an introduction or review.

Inner Life Of A Cell - Full Version

Inner Life Of A Cell - Full Version
Amanda's insight:

This is an incredible video of a simulated cell. It gives a great 3-D visualization of the movements and interactions between cell structures. I would love to show clips to the students without the explanations and see if they can identifiy the structures and processes they see.
