Genes to select trees with juicy peaches | Academic Outreach Index

Genes to select trees with juicy peaches | Academic Outreach Index | Agricultural and Biological Sciences | Scoop.it

Peaches are very important fruits in the fresh consumption market. Important producers are usually far away from their final consumers, so the fruit must be submitted to a prolonged (15 to 21 days) cold treatment during shipping before the full maturation process and the consumption, in order to avoid rot. During this process some peach varieties become woolly during the “in shelf” maturation giving a fruit with less juice, been a less attractive product. In this project we analyzed a group of genes that were formerly studied according to their behavior under cold treatment conditions within a peach variety that becomes woolly (O´Henry), based on these genes we developed molecular markers in order to assign a position in the genetic map. Ten of these markers were successfully positioned and are proposed to be used in the profiling of new varieties before taking them to the fields. These genes could be useful to generate a non transgenic solution for the production of juicy peach varieties.

A New Format to Communicate the Scientific Knowledge...

An Academic Outreach Review (AORev) is a summarized refereed publication extracted from an article already published or accepted to be published from no longer two years before the submission of it.

The main objective of AORev is to translate an original academic manuscript to a summarized version with a more communicative language, in order to be received, properly understand and finally distributed by non specialized editors to a non specialized audience in different social impact media without losing the real content of the original work. AORev aims to facilitate the transmition of the scientific community knowledge.

Under the editorial point of view, AORev contributes to increase the number of citations, the impact of the original article, and the immediacy index. This way, giving a higher visibility to the academic research
