Premature babies - Better Health Channel

Premature babies - Better Health Channel | Biological and environmental health of infants and toddlers | Scoop.it
Premature babies are born before 37 weeks gestation. Most premature babies have no long-term health problems, but some babies die as a result of being born too early.
Destiny's insight:

If a infant is born premature their maybe many complications with their health such as:
Lung disease
Feeding difficulties

Eye sight problems
Temperature control difficulties
Apnoea – (this is when the baby’s breathing stops for a short period of time. )
Bradycardia –( is a slowing down of the heart rate)
Jaundice – (the skin takes on a yellow colour)

Now because of technolgy many premature babies weighing over 2000 grams can survive. However back in the day when they didn't have the technology to suppport the needs of premature babies most of them would have died.

Aboriginal women, alcohol and the road to fetal alcohol spectrum disorder | Medical Journal of Australia | Biological and environmental health of infants and toddlers | Scoop.it
Destiny's insight:

Alcohol on little children can affect them both physically and emotionally.

Physically is when alcohol is consumed by the mother and passes through her blood to the fetus. This means that the baby "drinks" what the mother drinks. This can increase the risk of women having miscarriages and can result in fetal alcohol syndrome, birth defects such as mental retaedation, poor growth, abnormalities of the brain and spinal cord and abnormal facial features.

This article Aborginal women, alcohol and the road to fetal alcohol spectrum disorder also disccuses the emotional pain that brings toddlers when faced with drunk parents and neglect.

Sun safety protection – babies and children | Raising Children Network

Sun safety protection – babies and children | Raising Children Network | Biological and environmental health of infants and toddlers | Scoop.it
A guide to protecting your baby's and child’s skin from sun damage. Includes information on using sunscreen, sunblock, shade and protective clothing to prevent sunburn and sun damage.
Destiny's insight:

It is really important that parents protect baby's and child's skin from sun damage. It is also important to make sure they get enough sun otherwise the lack sun exposure is known as Vitamim D deficiency.  Parents need to know what they are putting on their infant's or children's skin otherwise the chemicals can be absorbed and damage the baby's organs. Scietinst have suggested you only apply the smallest amount such as the face and hands and cover the rest with clothing. It is really important parents are SUN SMART.

What to do when your child won't nap

What to do when your child won't nap | Biological and environmental health of infants and toddlers | Scoop.it
Young children need to nap, but getting them to sleep can sometimes be a real challenge. We look at some of the reasons children resist naptime, and give solutions to help you restore their natural sleep patterns.
Destiny's insight:

Napping for a toddler is very beneficial for their health. Scientists have proven that toddlers who don't nap get sick more often, and are more likely to be obese and possibly shorter. Also there is an increase in the child's mood, crying, whining, tantrums and fussiness.  Toddlers would also have a less attention span and brain development. Overall not napping (sleeping) can have a really negative effect on a toddler.

Destiny's insight:

Smoking is not just unhealthy for the person smoking but for people around them. This is called passive smoking. Effects on infants would be  premature birth and sudden unexpected death (SIDS). Health risks for passive smoking on toddlers are respiratory illnesses, more prone to getting colds, asthma and an increased risk of meningococcal disease, which can sometimes cause death or disability.

Not only does it affect toddlers physically but also emotionally. This youtube clip shows how a little one reacted to being separated from his mum for only a couple of minutes. This emphasises how a child would they react if a parent had died from smoking. It would cause them a lot of pain and even problems in later life such as behavioural isses and even sucide.
