Haille Soderholm's curator insight, December 11, 2014 6:55 PM

This article was very refreshing because it focused on eating disorders in men, which helped to break down the gender stigma that seems to surround eating disorders as people often apply them only to women (Feminism, 2013). Even in the Meyers text (2014), women and gay men are the only people mentioned as to the people who suffer "most often" from eating disorders (Meyers, 2014). While it is true that 9 out of 10 people suffering from anorexia nervosa are women, 40% of the people suffering from binge-eating disorder are men (Meyers, 2014; Feminism, 2013). This supports the notion that women are not the only people effected by eating disorders, and this article helps to shed light on this truth (Feminism, 2013). While the article I used for research, "Eating Disorders" (2014), touches on this concept by referring specifically to men and their likeliness to develop dysmorphyia (an extreme concern with becoming more muscular), the article also states that males are not as often diagnosed with "what is often considered a female disorder." (Eating Disorders, 2014). I believe this gender bias can be potentially harmful to many suffering males, who may feel that being diagnosed would immaculate them, and therefore they would go without treatment (Feminism, 2013). As for the information and terms, this article seems to be in alignment with Meyers (2014) with the additional perspective focusing solely on males (Feminism, 2013; Meyers, 2014). Because of this, I think that the information in this article is credible and accurate (Feminism, 2013). While the article does not account for diversity in ethnicity, diversity in gender is the main point in this article, which I see to be very important when learning about the often-viewed female problem of eating disorders (Feminism, 2013).
