How Smart, Connected Products Are Transforming Competition

How Smart, Connected Products Are Transforming Competition | Big Applications that Include IoT and M2M |

Information technology is revolutionizing products. Once composed solely of mechanical and electrical parts, products have become complex systems that combine hardware, sensors, data storage, microprocessors, software, and connectivity in myriad ways. These “smart, connected products”—made possible by vast improvements in processing power and device miniaturization and by the network benefits of ubiquitous wireless connectivity—have unleashed a new era of competition.

pat kennedy's insight:

Porter accurately describes the "Internet of Things" - noting that this phrase is not particularly useful as it is neither the Internet nor is it things.  It is the explosive growth of "smart, connected devices."  The obvious extrapolation of this is that the real value is created by the back ends that create the value - i.e. the value of Uber is not the mobile display, it is the back end that locates, dispatches, schedules rides and bills for them.

Connected products are changing how value is created for customers, how companies compete, and the boundaries of competition itself.

How will the 'internet of things' change our competitive environment (and therefore our lives and careers)? Good provocation form Michael Porter.

pat kennedy's insight:

while the new data base technology can help manage information that comes in many forms, the sensor based use cases require a totally different kind of processing and storage . Avoiding data loss and data corruption when new, unsolicited events arrive every second does not lend itself to query or etl type of processing.
