We have just added a free Primo code extension to the CodeShare area in EL Commons, the Ex Libris collaborative platform. It enables libraries using Primo to embed altmetrics from altmetric.com into the search results. I am very excited about this new feature. Read more about my take on altmetrics below the picture.

The Tree of Life: 10 things you can do to REALLY support #OpenAccess #PDFTribute

The Tree of Life: 10 things you can do to REALLY support #OpenAccess #PDFTribute | bibliolibrarianothecaire | Scoop.it

I wrote a post earlier today in relation to the #PDFTribute movement: Ten simple ways to share PDFs of your papers #PDFtribute.  I wrote it largely to give people an outlet and information and ideas about how to better share PDFs of their academic work.  I think the more people share the better.

However, I also got shit from my brother Michael - co founder of PLoS on Twitter about how this is partly a "feel good" action.  I do think he underestimates the surge of anger over the death of Aaron Swartz and the momentum right now in the semi-civil disobedience being seen in the #PDFTribute movement.  But I also think he is right in part. So, I thought I would follow up with suggestions for what people should do in the future to really support full and open access to the academic literature.

To make open access work, we need to do more than liberate journal articles | KurzweilAI

To make open access work, we need to do more than liberate journal articles | KurzweilAI | bibliolibrarianothecaire | Scoop.it

In the days since the tragedy of Aaron Swartz’s suicide, many academics have been posting open-access PDFs of their research as an act of solidarity with Swartz’s crusade to liberate (in most cases publicly funded) knowledge for all to read.

While this has been a noteworthy gesture, the problem of open access isn’t just about the ethics of freeing and sharing scholarly information. It’s as much — if not more — about the psychology and incentives around scholarly publishing. We need to think these issues through much more deeply to make open access widespread, suggests Wired.

Episciences.org

MOOCs and Libraries: a look at the landscape

MOOCs and Libraries: a look at the landscape | bibliolibrarianothecaire | Scoop.it

Unless you’ve been hiding under a rock, you know that MOOCs have been causing a bit of a stir in the academic sector. In the last year, MOOCs have exploded, from a handful of early innovators, to dozens of elite institutions becoming partners with organizations like Coursera, edX, and in the UK, the Open University lead FutureLearn venture. The reasons for this are many, well-documented, and also highly debated. Instead of reviewing what you can read elsewhere, I’d like to focus on the relationship between MOOCs and libraries. Here’s what I was curious about: What is the connection between MOOCs and libraries? What’s happening now and where are the opportunities?
