Les escaliers bétonnés de la capitale libanaise se parent des couleurs chaudes de la Méditerranée. C’est l’œuvre d’un collectif de jeunes graphistes amoureux de leur ville.

“The entire point is to get everyone involved and to take on our passion to paint up Beirut.”
Those are words from the DIHZAHYNERS, a group of people in their 20s seeking to transform the Lebanese capital. Founded in April this year as a collaboration of mostly Graphic Design students at the Lebanese American University, the collective has set out to bring colour to Beirut by painting the nestled stairs in neighbourhoods such as Ashrafieh.

No one can know what’s next for Egypt and Libya, but it doesn’t bode well that the revolution in Lebanon—a much better developed and more culturally democratic country—was undermined not just by dictatorships on the outside but also by Islamists with a serious base of support on the inside. Hezbollah’s totalitarian ideology of Islamic law at home and “resistance” abroad may not represent the majority view hardly anywhere, but there’s no denying that it stirs within the hearts and minds of a disturbingly large number of the Middle East’s people.
