If we’re honest, we’ll admit there are days when we make basic writing mistakes. The good news is a quick edit will find them, and they can be whipped into shape.

I recently finished a two-day workshop lead by Canadian school leader George Couros and hosted by my school (Sandvika High, near Oslo, Norway). I was not very pleased about the attendance.

The tone of the post is one that struck. My experience, as a teacher, was I looked for ways to avoid attending professional development that I was not sure what it meant in my practice and the learning of children. This might be a universal concern on the part of teachers.

I worked in Parkland, as well. The key is past tense. It took time to leave, because teaching and learning are at the core of who I am and it was heart-breaking to leave the classroom. As the inovative work we did was changed, I reached a point where it was still difficult to leave my calling (voice and vocation fit here), but the nature of the bureaucracy and technocracy made it necessary. Often, I was felt forced to do learning that did not fit with meeting children where they each were in their personal  learning i.e. technology as an end-all-to-be-all or the latest character education fad. Technology was used in my classroom on a daily basis in innovative and creative ways. Connecting with the world, is important, but what exactly does it mean to children and teachers learning together in their classrooms?

There is a need to move beyond the "expert mind" of training. Without that there is cult feeling to what is passed off as learning. It is certainly the case in educational settings.

Before you use this tool with students, learn to use it. Many of the rap lyrics are not appropriate for MS (at least not to read in print...). Many of the annotations are crude - are these good models? Also, strongly consider citations for images and poem texts - without these, we are teaching annotation, yes, but also how poor digital citizenship. And where is the conversation? It might cost more, but that would make the tool more useful. VoiceThread does the same thing, by the way, in a cleaner environment.

We thought that to be a very interesting question as well after reading the article. They are trends, but how often are they actually taking place within the classroom?

Interesting question!

Ivon Prefontaine, PhD's curator insight, February 3, 2014 8:01 PM

In a word the answer is no, but there will be times it is unavoidable. What we need to do is help them learn ways to effectively work within those situations. So we should not "let them" but they do need to learn what it means.

We only need to look at the adults who multitask and the way they cannot look you in the eye. Their twitter feed is more important than the person they grunted "hey" to.
