Peter Matthews's insight:

I wonder what the ideal ratio of (primarily) communicators to (primarily) researchers might be for different disciplines and communities of interest. For agriculture I suggest it should be one communicator for at least every 10,000 farmers, and possibly two communicators for every scientist (as there is a long backlog of agricultural science that has not yet been communicated very well...). These unscientific figures are from the top of my head.
