Math class needs a makeover | Dan Meyer

Today's math curriculum is teaching students to expect -- and excel at -- paint-by-numbers classwork, robbing kids of a skill more important than solving problems: formulating them.

"He addressed students who don’t and won’t engage, and how to change the way we present problems to change the paradigm for their learning. In the video, Meyer states, “Students need to decide, ‘All right, well, does the height matter? Does the side of it matter? Does the color of the valve matter? What matters here?’ — such an underrepresented question in math curricula.”

Teaching students to think about problems, rather than spoon feeding them the answers, will also teach them to stick with it. This is critical in addressing this part the CCSS.

teaching math

Hannah Jacobs's curator insight, May 20, 2017 5:45 AM
This TED talk by Dan Meyer provides a revolutionary view on how mathematics should be taught, as opposed to how it is currently being done.  He explains that 'Today's math curriculum is teaching students  to expect and excel at a paint-by-numbers classwork, robbing kids of a skill more important than solving problems: formulating them.'
He further explains that students lack initiative, perseverance, and retention, and that they have an aversion to word problems and are keen to just find a formula to solve.
Breaking maths down is necessary so that students will retain what they have learnt and will encourage them to participate in patient problem solving.
Using multimedia to bring the real world into the classroom and redefining math problems to relate to real world situations is the key to engaging students in mathematics studies.
Put simply, maths makes sense of the world.
Stacey Mendan's curator insight, May 27, 2017 10:15 PM

Mathematics is about the world. Mathematics requires perseverance, patience, exploration and questions to be asked. We need to support learners in embracing these activities and remind them that mathematics is everywhere.  Technology may be one part of achieving this.

Non-fiction Text: Using primary sources via LOC

Non-fiction Text: Using primary sources via LOC | Bethel Public Schools Common Core Committee | Scoop.it

"Recently I took a class through the Library of Congress Teaching with Primary Sources Program.  Since I often write about historical topics, I wanted to learn more about the collections at the Library of Congress (LOC).  I was amazed at their massive online collections which contain documents, maps, newspapers, images, sound recordings, sheet music and much, much more.  While searching the LOC website I found myself getting lost in a fascinating world of primary sources—a real treat for a nonfiction author."
