1961 Berlin Wall Goes Up

Sophie B's insight:

This is a great source that gives you a lot of background information on Berlin before and during the rise of the wall. This understanding is essential in moving forward in History. What were people thinking at the time? How did this Wall provide a solution? What did the Western world think about East Berlin? Did they assume any responsibility or take any action? How did it feel as a civilian to be trapped in East Berlin?

While Condemning Wall in Public, U.S. Officials Had Seen 'Long Term Advantage' if Potential Refugees Stayed in East Germany
Sophie B's insight:

This is one of the most interesting sources I have found yet! From the National Security Archive, declassified US documents show that while the USA publicly condemned the Berlin Wall in public, officials did not believe that it was completely negative and saw a long term advantages of keeping the wall there.

Sophie B's insight:

Here shows two pictures of a free, West Berlin family looking over the wall on the trapped East Berliners. East Berlin, occupied by the Soviets, was not free, whereas West Berlin was. Nearly all attempts at escaping over the wall were made by East Berliners seeking freedom in the West. This picture is very powerful. On a personal note, this picture reminds me of my father's first trip to Germany when he was just 12. He recalls standing in West Berlin, looking over the wall, and being instructed by his father to wave at the sad-looking boy, same age as him, standing on the East side.

Watch and listen to clips about the Berlin Wall.
Sophie B's insight:

BBC UK has a great interactive page in order to further one's knowledge of the rise and fall of the Berlin wall. I recommend watching the  "How the Berlin wall divided the city" clip. The old footage really helps us to go back in time and see just how intrusive and difficult this wall impacted Berliners - particularly those under Soviet control, in the East.

Sophie B's insight:

This website is really cool. It is a collection of both photographs and Berlin Wall art from May 1989, about six months before the fall of the Berlin Wall. It is very powerful seeing the soldiers walking around Brandenburg Gate or a man in East Berlin looking out the window into West Berlin. It is also really interesting to see the signs saying, in German, "Attention! You are now leaving West Berlin". This website is very important because it is a visual source that will allow people in future generations to see first-hand what life in Berlin looked like at this time.

Berlin Wall

Sophie B's insight:

Princeton University has created a very in-depth, educating website on everything there is to know about the Berlin Wall, ranging from post-war Germany, to the fall of the Wall, to media reports on the Wall.   It included several facts that I did not know and had not seen elsewhere. Did you know that West Berlin nicknamed the Berlin Wall the "Wall of Shame"? Or that the Berlin Wall symbolized the "Iron Curtain" because it was between Western Europe and the Eastern Bloc (Soviet-dominated, communist states)?

Germany: 'Ukraine crisis worst since Berlin Wall' - The Local

Germany: 'Ukraine crisis worst since Berlin Wall' - The Local | Berlin Wall | Scoop.it
The Ukraine crisis is the worst in Europe since the fall of the Berlin Wall and diplomacy is now essential to avoid military escalation, German Foreign Minister
Sophie B's insight:

Interesting how politicians and other people affected by the Ukraine crisis are putting it on a scale comparable to the downfall of the Berlin Wall. While I see how the Ukraine crisis is quite terrible, perhaps just as shocking as the Berlin Wall, I think that these events are, in fact, quite different.
