BYOD Happy Hour
I'm on a mission to find mobile resources that actually work on ANY device (laptop, iphone/ipod/ipad, android). I told my students that my New Years resolution was to use BYOD in the classroom on a daily basis, and to try a new site or app every week. WOW! What a challenge! Wish me luck!

Mobile Applications Versus Mobile Web Sites In Education - University Web Developers

Mobile Applications Versus Mobile Web Sites In Education - University Web Developers | BYOD Happy Hour | Scoop.it
The future of mobile development is a strong one. The question these days is... Is it better to build a mobile website or a mobile app ? Will new and developi…
Kara Berger's insight:

When I use BYOD in my classroom, the variety of devices students bring is overwhelming, and the process of students downloading apps is cumbersome (often parents do not give their child the password for itunes, google play, etc or students forget their password).  I LOVE it when I am able to find an awesome interactive, mobile website.  I shorten the link (go to goo.gl to do this) and WOLLAH my students are able to access web content instantly!  If only all of those educaiton flash animations/interactives could be viewed on moblie devices.... :-(

That grocery cart looks like my toy room some days... and if my phone or iPad could look like that... showing all of the apps/documents/etc. that are stored in it...could you imagine what that would like?!  Yikes!

I agree that finding some apps, chrome store, websites would be great then I would not have to worry about not having enough technology to go around my classroom.... i.e. my 15 mini laptops with Photoshop Elements.

Kara Berger's insight:

I haven't tried this one yet...I'm wondering if I can send texts through the web to their browsers instead directly to their phones (so the kids who do not have cell phones can use the browsers on the school laptops).

We make simple learning tools that let you study anything, for free.
Kara Berger's insight:

I just discovered that Quizlet works as a mobile site and uses html5, so it can be used on ANY device without downloading an app.  The site is interactive (flashcards, games, practice quizzes) WITHOUT flash/java!  Wahoo!  FInally an interactive site all my students can use on all their different devices!

Here's my attempt at putting together a moible review activity: goo.gl/rmrE6

Kara Berger's insight:

My students used their devices to gather data from their experiments on the greenhouse effect (using a google form- FREE!).  They plugged in their results, and created a quick graph!  Instant visual! :-)

Screencast-o-matic.com is my new best friend :)

Kara Berger's insight:

YouTube videos work on ANY device, and I just discovered how to create how-to "doodle" videos like on kahnacademy.com.  I used screencast-o-matic (FREE), the free "Paint" application (FREE), and I purchased a writing tablet on Amazon (VT PenPad 34.99 on Amazon).  My next attempt is to see what happens when I have my students try to create these videos :-).

One of my favorite teacher / student clickers because it's supported on any device, including the web. I control mine with the iPad and use the laptop cart, so this software works in case you're not 1-1 with iPods or iPads yet.

Bring your own device and transform student mobile devices for quick data analysis and allow instant feedback to assess learning.

Adam Schulman's curator insight, May 16, 2014 12:24 PM

This is a great tool! Socrative allows teachers to prepare interactive quizzes that can be used in real time.  Once the teacher is prepared to start the quiz, he/she can have them login to the quiz room from their tablets or smart phones.  My favorite style of running the quiz is through the space race, which shows how quickly each student can answer the questions.  The quizzes can either be multiple choice, short answer, and true or false.  The quizzes will also be able to show a clear breakdown of how the students answered the questions.
