Biography | Benazir Bhutto | Scoop.it

Benazir Bhutto was the first female leader in a Muslim country, specifically Pakistan. Since her death December 27 2007 Pakistan has not had female leader. Her family is originally from Bhutto tribe of Sindhis. She studied Law at Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford University. After that, she studied at St Catherine's and became president of the Oxford Union in 1976. It is evident that leadership and politics was a passion of hers from the beginning. Her father was also a prime minister for Pakistan so it was in her blood. She was sworn in as prime minister in 1988 at the age of 35. She was a democratic socialist. She was known for brining democracy back to Pakistan. She was a strong personable leader. Soon after becoming prime minister, she was then removed from office then-president Ghulam Ishaq Khan because of alleged corruption. After eight years in exile she returned to Pakistan. Although enthusiastic crowds greeted her within hours of her arrival, a suicide bomber attacked her motorcade. She survived this first assassination attempt, although more than 100 bystanders died in the attack. After a campaign rally in Rawalpindi, a gunman fired at her car before detonating a bomb, killing himself and more than 20 bystanders. This resulted in Benazir Bhutto's death.
