WHO | HIV/AIDS sex work toolkit

WHO | HIV/AIDS sex work toolkit | Behavior Theories & Interventions | Scoop.it

About the sex work toolkit

In many parts of the world, sex workers have been among the groups most vulnerable to and most affected by HIV since the beginning of the AIDS pandemic. After more than a decade of research and intervention in sex work settings there is a substantial body of knowledge on the behaviours that put sex workers, their clients and regular partners at risk and on the contextual factors that create vulnerability to HIV/AIDS. In addition, much has been learnt about what works to prevent HIV transmission in sex work settings, about how to provide care and support services, and to empower sex workers to improve their health and well-being.

Some of this knowledge has been disseminated through published research and conference presentations but much knowledge and expertise has not been formally documented or exists only in unpublished reports. The purpose of this toolkit is to make both published and unpublished information more accessible to a wider audience, and so to contribute to global efforts to develop and scale up effective HIV interventions in sex work settings.

Most of the items in this toolkit focus on HIV prevention in such settings. Less information is available on treatment, care and support for sex workers living with HIV. Tools relating to these matters will be added as they become available.

Theory development for HIV behavioral health: empirical validation of behavior health models specific to HIV risk

Theory development for HIV behavioral health: empirical validation of behavior health models specific to HIV risk | Behavior Theories & Interventions | Scoop.it

Abstract

In the presence of numerous health behavior theories, it is difficult to determine which of the many theories is most precise in explaining health-related behavior. New models continue to be introduced to the field, despite already existing disparity, overlap, and lack of unification among health promotion theories. This paper will provide an overview of current arguments and frameworks for testing and developing a comprehensive set of health behavior theories. In addition, the authors make a unique contribution to the HIV health behavior theory literature by moving beyond current health behavior theory critiques to argue that one of the field’s preexisting, but less popular theories, Social Action Theory (SAT), offers a pragmatic and broad framework to address many of the accuracy issues within HIV health behavior theory. The authors conclude this article by offering a comprehensive plan for validating model accuracy, variable influence, and behavioral applicability of SAT.

This map shows the distribution of young women who did use a condom last time they had ‘high-risk’ sex. That is sex with someone they are not married to or do not live with. Not everyone has access to condoms, can demand their use, or wants to use them. Only 40% of young women around the world used condoms the last time they had risky sex.

Break the Chain National SBCC Campaign Namibia | C-Hub

Break the Chain National SBCC Campaign Namibia | C-Hub | Behavior Theories & Interventions | Scoop.it

This multi-level, multi-channel campaign includes a mass media component of TV spots, radio spots and dramas, and billboards, posters, and flyers for awareness raising and knowledge increase around MCP. The campaign addresses a key driver of the HIV epidemic in Namibia, the practice of multiple and concurrent sexual partnerships. The ultimate goal is reduction of HIV transmission in the country. The media component is linked to interpersonal communications consisting of IPC materials for use by civil society and other partners in communities and workplaces, to create discussion around MCP, transactional sex, cross-generational sex, and couples' communication. The Integrated Session Guides are participatory sessions that can be implemented by field workers and volunteers in communities, workplaces and clinical settings to generate discussion on the drivers of the HIV epidemic with target audiences in three age groups: 10-14, 15-24 and 25-49 years old. The Guides assist partners working in the prevention of HIV and will result in widespread discussion for behavior change, contributing to HIV reduction and prevalence in Namibia. Other producers of this project include NASOMA and the Ministry of Information and Communication Technology's Take Control Partnership.

Choice HIV- California HIV options

Choice HIV- California HIV options | Behavior Theories & Interventions | Scoop.it

Why theory matters
Behavior change is generally complex; there are countless influential factors that influence group and individual behaviors. Theory is important because it identifies patterns and causal relationships among beliefs, attitudes, and actions. An established framework is necessary to develop and implement interventions that promote behavior change. Theories help explain behaviors and behavior change at the individual, interpersonal, community, and ecological levels.

Information about the role of theory in HIV prevention is available.

The theoretical basis for an intervention is identified and described on the Intervention Details page available for all interventions in the Selection Tool. The list below includes many of the commonly used HIV prevention interventions theories.

HIV/AIDS Prevention - Intervention Theories and Models: Washington State Dept. of Health | Behavior Theories & Interventions | Scoop.it

Theories tell us why people do what they do. Models tell us how they do it. Today, HIV Prevention Programs can draw from many different social and behavioral theories. It is important to remember that it may be necessary to select an intervention based on more than one theory or model.

Risk reduction, health belief, stages of change, empowerment, diffusion of innovation, social cognitive and reasoned action intervention theories.
