an interesting read, different from many the generic commercial uses of the ipad. If only in todays society, more technology could be produced specifically for those with disorders such as autism

Is California's largest HMO autism friendly? - San Francisco Chronicle (blog)

Is California's largest HMO autism friendly? - San Francisco Chronicle (blog) | Behavior Analysis | Scoop.it

I am a parent and one of my children has autism. Like many California parents, after I drop off my kids off at school, I turn on the radio.

Every morning I listen to advertisements from the largest HMO in the state, Kaiser Permemante. These ads tell me to laugh, listen to music, and exercise not only my body but my "flabby brain."

I thought I heard all the feel-good tips they had to offer until this morning, when I heard the newest in this series of ads, this one about "being happy." As a means to become more healthy, Kaiser advises people to perform "random acts of kindness" and encourages listeners to "let someone ahead of you in line at the store or pay the toll for the car behind you." The ads say that according to studies, these kinds of actions will not only improve our own happiness, but also our health. The commercials always end with the message that Kaiser Permanente wants us to "live well and thrive!"

Kaiser may take that attitude toward many of its members, but not those who have a child with autism. Over two years ago, I received my first set of denials associated with basic treatment for my son's disorder. They denied Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), Speech therapy, and Occupational therapy.

Climate Change and Human Behavior | The Sociology of Climate Change

Climate Change and Human Behavior | The Sociology of Climate Change | Behavior Analysis | Scoop.it

I recently read Kari Marie Norgaard’s, Living in Denial: Climate Change, Emotions, and Everyday Life, an excellent and somewhat unusual book that has instantly made its way onto the list of “must read” books that I send people when they ask for recommendations.[1] The primary reason I think so highly of this work is simple: It describes a facet of our climate change mess that has received far too little attention, and delivers some deep and possibly critical revelations in the process. In fact, this is the first time I’ve seen an expert focus explicitly and at length on the sociology of climate change and not psychology, economics, politics, activism, or, dare I say it, the underlying climate science. Norgaard does talk briefly about other areas, most notably psychology, but her primary focus here is on sociology.
