Typologie des élevages de cobayes ( Cavia porcellus ) au Bénin

Au Bénin, la caviaculture est méconnue du grand public. Elle est ignorée des chercheurs et des décideurs politiques. Ainsi, l’objectif de cette étude est d’identifier les zones d’élevage de cobayes, décrire les différentes techniques d’élevage et faire la typologie de ces élevages. A cet effet, une enquête conduite suivant la méthode en boule de neige a été utilisée.

A nitrogen (N) balance digestion trial was conducted to determine the protein requirement of collared peccaries (Pecari tajacu). In a 4 × 4 Latin square design, four captive adult male peccaries were fed four isoenergy diets containing four different levels of N (11.7, 16.3, 22.8, and 26.7 g N/kg of dry matter—DM).

"Therefore, if food intake is unrestricted, collared peccaries require a minimum in their diet of about 5.4% crude protein on DM basis. These values are almost as low as those found for browsing and frugivorous wild ruminants, which reinforce the proposition that peccaries’ digestive physiology is nearer to that of domestic and wild ruminants than domestic pigs. This relatively low protein requirement of collared peccary and its great ability to digest protein reveal the relevance of the forestomach for the species on nitrogen/protein metabolism and allow the use of diets with lower crude protein levels than the commercial ones used for the domestic pig, which reduces feed costs."

Lors d’une enquête socioéconomique sur la caviaculture dans le cadre du projet Cobayes, piloté par l’Université de Dschang, dans la partie Ouest, Centre et Est du Cameroun, il nous a été constaté que la majorité des familles résidant en milieu rural le faisait dans un système purement traditionnel. De plus les connaissances dans l’alimentation par ces derniers ne permettaient pas aux animaux de valoriser efficacement l’aliment servi. Pour que cet animal mange équilibré, il sera important de lui donner une alimentation riche et équilibré car ces besoins sont d’ordre : énergétiques, protéiques, fibrique. Un apport en micronutriments (calcium, phosphore, magnésium etc.) est nécessaire.

The effect of earthworm (Eisenia foetida) meal with vermi-humus on growth performance, hematology, immunity, intestinal microbiota, carcass characteristics, and meat quality of broiler chickens

Varied concentrations of EW showed increased total counts of lactic acid bacteria (linear, P<0.05; quadratic, P=0.3) and reduced population of pathogenic intestinal microbiota (linear, P<0.05; quadratic, P>0.05). Similarly, the meat quality of broiler chicken was markedly affected linearly (P<0.05) by the supplementation of increased dietary EW. Briefly, diets containing 30 g EW/kg of DM can positively affect the growth performance of broiler chickens and produce meat with better characteristics."

Reproduction, growth performance and docility in common coat and albino grasscutters (Thryonomys swinderianus)

The production efficiency of any livestock depends to a large extent on its reproductive performance. Research is needed to overcome the problems associated with reproduction and docility in domesticated grasscutter. The present study was conducted to compare the reproductive, growth and docility in common coat and albino grasscutters using the kindling records of 108 does (72 common coat and 39 albino does).

Determination Du Niveau De Fibres Dans L'aliment Granule Chez L'aulacodine (Thryonomys Swinderianus, Temminck 1827): Impacts Sur Les Performances Zootechniques

Determination of fibers level in grass-cutters (Thryonomys swinderianus, Temminck 1827) granulated diet: impacts on zootechnic performance. The grass-cutter or cane rat is a monogastric herbivore domesticated in Africa for meat production. Dietary fibre intake seems to play an important role in its digestive functioning, although the effects of fibre level on reproductive parameters of female cane rat remain largely unknown. An experiment was carried out to estimate the optimal fibre content of complete pelleted diets which optimizes the reproduction performance of female cane rat. Feed intake, digestible energy intake, and reproductive parameters of ad libitum fed female cane rat were studied for four diets differing in fibre levels (14, 18, 22 and 26 % of acid detergent fibre (ADF)) on 4 groups of 8 female animals.

"Les poids moyens final, le gain moyen quotidien, les taux de fécondité, de prolificité, de fertilité, de mortinatalité et la taille des portées des reproductrices n’ont pas été impactés par le niveau de fibres alimentaires. Les valeurs moyennes respectives ont été de 3156 g ; 7,29 g/j ; 47,11 % ; 52,32 % ; 90,18 % ; 7,71 % et 3,6 aulacodeaux avec un sexe ratio à la naissance d’un mâle pour une femelle. Cependant, les animaux nourris aux rations 14 % et 18 % d’ADF ont enregistré les plus faibles indices de consommation (5,8 ± 1,5 g/j et 7,9 ± 3,3 g/j) (p ˂ 0,01). Ces rations ont été mieux digérées avec un coefficient de digestibilité de la matière sèche supérieur à celui des lots 3 et 4 respectivement de 1,12 fois et 1,18 fois (p ˂ 0,01). An eight week feeding trial was conducted to evaluate the effect of earthworm meal supplementation in various cassava based products in growing rabbit diets. Nine isocaloric and isonitrogenous diets were formulated such that each diet contained a constant amount of Soybean Meal, SBM (50%) and Cassava Leaf Meal, CLM (25%) as part of the protein component. The remaining 25% protein of animal origin was supplied by Fish Meal (FM) and Earthworm Meal (EWM) in varying proportions....

"Twenty seven (27) growing rabbits of mixed breeds and sexes were allotted to the nine dietary treatments such that each was replicated three times and were fed and watered ad libitum. Data collected included feed intake, weight gain, feed conversion ratio, as well as carcass characteristics, organ weights and gut dimension. Results showed that feed intake was not significantly (P>0.05) affected by dietary treatments but weight gain and FCR were both enhanced (P<0.05). Treatment effects on carcass characteristics, organ weights and gut dimensions were not significant. The results suggested that EWM protein can replace 50% of FM protein in rabbit diets without any adverse effects."

SKILLS NEEDED FOR PRODUCTIVE GRASSCUTTER REARING AT THE RURAL LEVEL: THE CURRENT APPLICATION LEVEL AND IMPROVEMENT NEEDS OF THE FARMERS

The study was carried out to determine the grasscutter rearing skill improvement needs of farmers for income enhancement and sustainable livelihood. Three research questions and three null hypotheses guided the study. The study adopted Borich need assessment model. The population for the study was 126 comprised of 83 registered grasscutter farmers and 43 extension Agents.

Part abstract: "The findings of the study revealed that 42 skill items were required while farmers needed improvementin 29items for effective grasscutter rearing. The null hypotheses tested for the study at 0.05 level of significance showed that there were no significant differences between the mean responses of grasscutter farmers and agricultural extension agents on the skills required in entering into grasscutter rearing enterprise. Based on the findings, it was recommended that the identified skills be utilized in training target grasscutter farmers at the rural level where small scaled farming can be easily encouraged to strive."

Effet de l’amendement au carbonate de calcium
(mikhart) de substrat d’élevage sur les performances de reproduction de l’escargot Achatina achatina (Linné, 1758)

" Des naissains d’escargots âgés de deux mois, avec un poids vif moyen de 3,30 ± 1,00 g et une longueur moyenne de coquille de 2,8 0 ± 0,33 cm ont été soumis à un régime alimentaire concentré sous forme de farine. Durant 24 mois, ces mollusques ont été élevés sur cinq types de substrats d’élevage (S 0 (terreau) substrat témoin, S Ca10 (S 0 + 10 % poudre de carbonate de calcium), S Ca20 (S 0 + 20 % poudre de carbonate de calcium), S Ca30 (S 0 + 30 % poudre de carbonate de calcium) et S Ca40 (S 0 + 40 % poudre de carbonate de calcium)). Les résultats ont montré que l’amendement du substrat d’élevage avec de la poudre carbonate de calcium (Mikhart) a une influence significative sur la reproduction de A. achatina en ce sens que la maturité sexuelle est atteinte pl us précocement à 14 mois sur les substrats S Ca10 et S Ca20 puis tardivement sur le substrat S 0 non amendé (20 mois)."

Conclusion et application des résultats : Il convient donc de retenir que la poudre de carbonate de calcium (Mikhart) est une bonne source d’amendement calcique des substrats d’élevage de A. achatina et pourrait être conseillée à quiconque voudrait faire l’élevage de cette espèce. Toutefois, il serait profitable de mener cette expérimentation avec les autres espèces d’escargots géants.

Effect of Feeding Different Energy Level Feeds on Litter Growth Performance of Rabbits in Three Successive Kindlings

The present study was under taken to study the effect of feeding different energy level feeds on the litter growth performance in rabbits in three successive kindlings at the Small Animal House, Veterinary College, Bangalore. Twelve adult females of second kindling stage and three male rabbits aged between 8 and 9 months with average weight of 2500–2650 g were randomly allotted to three different treatment groups of four animals in each group, namely, Control, T1 and T2 in a completely randomized design (CRD). Rabbits in control group were fed ad lib quantity (2500 Kcal of digestible energy/Kg) and second treatment (T1) group with 2250 Kcal of digestible energy/Kg of diet by restricting 10 % of feed and the treatment (T2) group with 2000 Kcal of digestible energy/Kg of diet restricting 20 % of feed offered than control.

Part abstract: "The study concluded that high energy diet has an influence on kindling, increases litter size at birth and at weaning, and reduces the age of weaning of bunnies from 42 to 30 days. Bunnies attained a body weight of 400g at weaning. Hence, high energy diet is recommended to obtain good kindling performance in rabbits, which in turn which will increase in economic returns by producing more number of young ones and making rabbitary a highly profitable enterprise."

This study investigated the cost effectiveness of graded replacement levels of maize with Sun-dried Mango (Mangifera indica) Kernel Meal (SMKM) in the diets of growing Japanese quails (Coturnix coturnix japonica) over a period of four weeks (28 days). One hundred and forty four unsexed Japanese quails of about 2 weeks old and about the same weights (26.56 ± 0.02g) were randomly allotted to three dietary treatments of 48 quails each.

Comparative Dietary Values of Dried Pawpaw Leaves, Cassava Leaves and Orange Pulp for Giant African Land Snails


The result showed that the control diet (pawpaw leaves based) was most consumed, gave the highest weight gain and visceral weight, but the orange pulp based diet gave most efficient Feed Conversion Ratio (FCR) and dressing percentage (p<0.05). The study recommends the use of the three test ingredients as feed components for the Giant African Land Snails.

Digestibilité in vivo de trois types de rations alimentaires en vrac à base de fourrages verts, produits et sous-produits de maïs chez l’aulacode d’élevage au Benin

Objectif : Au Bénin, l’aulacodiculture constitue un acquis important en matière d’élevage des espèces animales non conventionnelles. L’objectif est d’évaluer la digestibilité in vivo de 3 rations alimentaires à base de fourrages verts, produits et sous-produits de maïs et autres ingrédients alimentaires chez l’aulacode d’élevage.

Conclusions et Application : La ration 2 constituée de fourrages verts, de produits et sous-produits de maïs et autres ingrédients alimentaires est la plus consommée et la plus digérée par les aulacodes d’élevages et la ration 3 constituée des produits et sous-produits de maïs est la moins digérée. La ration alimentaire 2 peut être utilisée par les éleveurs d’aulacode pour nourrir les animaux afin d’améliorer la digestibilité et les performances pour une production durable de l’aulacodiculture.

A alimentação representou 45% e 29% dos custos variáveis, respectivamente. Uma das vantagens em se criar animais silvestres é a pequena necessidade de mão de obra. Estes resultados e os de outros estudos, em um horizonte de dez anos, constataram que a criação comercial de pacas pode se tornar uma alternativa viável da diversificação de produção e renda para os produtores da região,, além de vários outros ganhos não computados, referentes ao valor econômico dos recursos ambientais.

The present study was conducted to evaluate the effect of rabbit phenotypes and production systems (traditional vs. intensive) on the production performance of indigenous rabbits in Northern Pakistan. A total of 128 rabbits from four distinct phenotypes, denoted as white, black and white, brown and black, were allotted to a traditional (household subsistence) and intensive (modern husbandry and balanced feeding) production systems for a period of 12 months.

L’aviculture urbaine familiale au Sénégal: caractérisation et rôle socio-économique dans la commune de Thiès

L’étude est réalisée à Thiès, ville située à 70 km de Dakar, en vue d’identifier et de caractériser l’aviculture familiale. Elle est conduite auprès de 271 acteurs de la filière. Dans cette ville, l’aviculture est pratiquée par plusieurs catégories socioprofessionnelles dont l’âge varie de 15 à 69 ans. L’activité est plus masculine (88,42%) que féminine; elle est réalisée par des aviculteurs instruits. Les autres acteurs sont les vendeurs d’aliment, les accouveurs, les artisans.

Effect of Whole Cassava Root and Yam Tubers on Performance of Grasscutter (Thryonomus swindarianus) Held in Captivity

This study was carried out to investigate the effect of whole cassava root and yam tubers on performance of grasscutter. Twenty-seven young male grass cutter (Thyrononys swindarianus), 5-7 months old with an average body weight of679.00±1.95g were used in a completely randomized design experiment lasted for 12 weeks. Animals were groupedto three groups with nine animals per group, balanced for body weight (680.20.20± 1.80g, 678.50± 2.15g and 679.00± 1.90g) and designated as Gl, G2, and G3 groups respectively.

Growth performance of grasscutters fed diets containing Moringa oleifera leaf meal and/or soybean meal

A total of ninety six-week old grasscutters were used in a study conducted to investigate the growth performance of grasscutters fed diets containing Moringa oleifera leaf meal (MOLM) and/or soybean meal (SBM). The ninety (90) grasscutters were randomly assigned to three experimental groups consisting of thirty (30) grasscutters each. The grasscutters were randomly assigned each to three experimental diets designated as follows: 15% MOLM, 15% SBM, and 10% MOLM + 10% SBM. Feed and water were provided ad libitum. Data were collected on growth performance during the period of the study which lasted for ten weeks including two weeks of acclimatization period.

CARCASS YIELD AND GUT CHARACTERISTICS OF BROILER CHICKENS FED DIFFERENT TYPES OF PHYTOGENIC PLANT LEAF EXTRACT AS FEED ADDITIVES

An experiment was designed to evaluate the effect of some herbal plant extracts additives as alternatives growth promoters for broiler chicks. Three different phytogenic plants were collected i.e. Azandiracta indica, Gueiria senegalensis and Commiphora kerstingii were sundried and grounded into powder form and their extracts were fed to broilers with synthetic antibiotics fed as control diet.

"It can be concluded that out of the three medicinal plants, Commiphora kerstingii gavethe highest performance and it can be recommended as source of additive for broiler production in the tropics; this willprovide availability of the materials since they are sourced locall y in the environment and reduce the cost of production."

STRESS MODULATING EFFECT OF CRUDE LEAF EXTRACT OF VERNONIA AMYGDALINA IN CAPTIVE GRASSCUTTER (Thryonomys swinderianus)

The effect of administering graded concentration levels of Vernonia amygdalina (bitter leaf) crude leaf powder to captive grasscutters on growth performance, haematology, serum biochemistry and faecal worm egg-counts were evaluated. Animals were randomly assigned to four treatments with three replicates per treatment, each having three animals. Treatment A (control) was given distilled water while treatments B, C and D were given albendazole (according to manufacturers prescription), 25ml and 50ml V. amygdalina per litre of water respectively. The highest weight gain was observed in animals in treatment D compared to those in other treatments.

Part abstract: "Vernonia amygdalina was more effective in controlling helminthes in weaner grasscutters at either of the levels used than the synthetic drug administered (albendazole) and has no deleterious effect on the gut microflora profile of the stomach, small intestine and caecum of the grasscutter. It was concluded that Vernonia amygdalina leaf powder could improve the growth performance of weaner grasscutters at any of the levels used without deleterious effect, though there is need to test the efficacy of higher doses on the animal. "

Growth Performance of
Grasscutter (Thryonomys swinderianus) Fed with Fresh Yellow Sweet Potato Leaves Diets in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria

This study was conducted to determine the growth performance of grasscutter (Thryonomys swinderianus) fed with fresh yellow sweet potato in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State. The study adopted a pretest - posttest randomized control group arrangement. A multi - stage sampling technique was used to select eight (8) eight - weeks old grasscutters allotted to two treatment groups of four animals each.

"The results revealed that body weight, body length and hind leg length growth performance was better in grasscutters fed with fresh yellow sweet potato leaves feeds among other findings. Based on the findings, it was recommended that grasscutter farmers should use fresh yellow sweet potato leaves and can supplement the feeds to enhance better growth among other recommendations."
