Chipping Away at the Digital Divide - Knewton

Chipping Away at the Digital Divide - Knewton | beawaretolearn | Scoop.it
It’s been almost 20 years since the New York Times helped coin the phrase “digital divide” with a true tale of two elementary schools in San Jose located within a stone’s throw of Apple’s headquarters. The Harker School, an elite private academy, had state-of-the-art Power Macs and access to what was then known as the World Wide Web. Just a mile down the road, Anderson Elementary, one of California’s poorest schools, had outdated PCs that... Read more

Change in the macro business environment moves at lightning speed. What has remained unchanged is the content of many leadership development programs — to global leaders’ detriment.
Luis Castanheira Pinto's insight:

It is not rhetoric, it is a genuine question: why is there so much resistance to admit new IT literacy and creativity to be crucial leadership competences? Why do we - L&D officers - need to struggle so much?

Davos 2016: Time to Learn About Learning

Davos 2016: Time to Learn About Learning | beawaretolearn | Scoop.it
As an educator I am fascinated by the way that learning will be re-shaped over the coming decades. Here are some of the far-reaching questions debated at Davos this year and the experiments discussed. Shouldn’t craft-based apprenticeship be encouraged? Historically the returns to higher education have been significant: Graduates have earned more than non-graduates. But as more executives are bemoaning the lack of job-related skills in graduates, will this trend persist? Or, should apprentice learning be encouraged, particularly at a time when artisanal endeavours could well be a growing sector of the workforce? During the industrial revolution the craft-base

Is Your Learning Introvert-Friendly? | 2015-09-25 | CLOmedia | beawaretolearn | Scoop.it
Imagine this scenario: For the fifth time that morning, the management training facilitator asked if there were any questions. The roomful of mostly introverted engineers fell silent. Rather than engage people in small groups or ask them to write down their ideas, she continued to run her class the way she had always done — geared toward extroverts. The result? The quieter folks in the room weren’t heard, nor were they engaged with the material. The extroverts who might have benefited with their questions and . . .

This post was written by Jose Ferreira, Knewton founder and CEO, and Meghan Daniels, senior editor  Winston Churchill famously said, “Democracy is the worst form of government, except all the others.” Until recently, the same could be said for the factory model of education. Imported from Europe and implemented at the urging of education reformer Horace Mann, the factory model puts kids into age-based classrooms and uses seat time to determine when they’re ready to move... The Triple Focus: A New Approach to Education - More Than Sound

The Triple Focus: A New Approach to Education - More Than Sound | beawaretolearn | Scoop.it

Daniel Goleman and Peter Senge provide educators with a rationale for incorporating three core skill sets in the classroom—understanding self, other, and the larger systems within which we operate—and show why these competencies are needed to help students navigate a fast-paced world of increasing distraction and growing interconnectedness. The book also offers examples of model educational programs that include these competencies in their curriculum, and shares best practices for introducing them in schools.
