A stain that is a genuine stain from food or oils or drinks is another issue. We need to remember that terracotta is a natural and a porous product. It will absorb liquids and oils and these will stain the tile. A buildup of these can actually be part of the character and charm of terracotta. It is a natural aging process or 'patina.'

This can happen if two tiles are rubbing against each other during freight and transport. If this does happen, it is usually with wall tiles that have a softer glaze than the tougher floor tiles. For this reason, when Beaumont Tiles pack part box quantities ordered for a project, we tape the loose tiles together and pack them face to face.

My shower is leaking through the tiles

Unfortunately, leaking shower recesses are one of the most common building faults and complaints in Australia. It really doesn't need to be the case though. The modern waterproofing systems that are available, and the tough building codes that we have in place mean that with correct installation, a shower recess should never leak (except due to extreme structural movement).

The patterns on my frieze tiles don't line up

Imperfect frieze tiles, borders and patterns sometimes slip through the sorting and grading process in the factory. These tiles are not intended to leave the factory, but it has been known for a few imperfect tiles to slip through. Somehow, the pattern is not straight or complete, or the colours are wrong.

Tiles, whether ceramic or porcelain, are a great product and they are very easy to clean and maintain. Normally tiles require very little time and effort to keep clean: you should only need a bit of water and vinegar once a week.

The final kiln temperature, slight changes in glaze mix, and dozens of other variables can affect the final tile appearance and size. My Polished Porcelain floor does not seem to have an even shine

Porcelain is a fantastic, tough, and very durable product that makes an ideal floor surface. It is easy to live with, easy to clean and maintain, and will look brilliant for many, many years. Plus, of course, porcelain also has many other benefits like all ceramic tiles.

From time to time, small, hairline cracks can appear in the glazed surface of tiles. This phenomenon is referred to as 'crazing.' Tiles are not designed to craze, but it is a recognised inherent property that can occur with glazed tiles. A crazed tile will still perform properly and there is no reason for concern. Crazing can often be seen in old or antique pottery or chinaware.

Under certain circumstances, a white powder can form on unglazed terracotta type floor tiles. This is a natural phenomenon call efflorescence. It is due to soluble rising to the surface from the concrete slab. When they dry out on the surface, the remaining salts appear white and powdery.
