G'day Sue Wesgarth is the publicity officer for Rivoli Bay Sailing Club at Southend South Australia. She does the write ups for the local papers and I will repost her writeups unedited but also post my thoughts on the weekend, feel free to post constructive posts on this thread as well

Rivoli Bay Sailing Club is the most travelled sailing club that I know of it has eight programmed away sailing weekends when they close the club to visit South Aus and Victorian regattas they also travel to other places. They are heavily into promoting youth sailing with their mix of cats and mono's, they have 60 grade 6 & 7 school children from schools in a 60km radius booked into do midweek sailing as part of the school corriculum and are working to get all of their sailors qualified to instruct these kids. Saturday just gone I watched Brad, Sues partner on their Cobra take out a new adult and 2 young children before racing started. You can't help but be pumped up by their energy and enthusiasm when you sail there. For photos look in Jeff Southall's photo albums under the heading Rivoli Bay Sailing Club we'll try to post some photos each week to complement the sailing report. You may think it wrong to have monos racing the same course but less laps in the write up but all of the present Rivoli catsailors were on monos less than 5yrs ago.

Rivoli Bay Sailing Club at Southend South Australia held their first Sail Training day for kids on Saturday morning 23rd Feb 2013. After running three Discover Sailing days with local schools during the school week in November and February the club felt it had enough volunteers to train six kids as an initial program, they sent fliers to the local schools and put an add in the local paper, all those that enrolled paid for the full four Saturday mornings course up front. They had to turn four kids away and still hosted eleven on the day because they kept turning up which was enormously successful but it didn’t end there, the kids parents stayed and watched with some expressing interest in sailing themselves. It didn’t end there either as the club had booked in eight members of the local hiking club to come racing on the club members boats in the afternoon as their introduction to sailing.

The day was a hot 36 degrees so no wetsuits were needed, the wind was probably a bit strong with some gusts over 20 knots, the wind was blowing from inside the bay off shore about two km away back towards the shore where we were sailing and the chop was only about two to three foot with no swell. There was some early consideration about abandoning the sailing component and focussing on teaching the kids on the shore due to the wind but all the skippers felt comfortable going out, I think the kids got a heck of a confidence boost being on the water in control in plenty of wind, they were all soaking wet within a few seconds of leaving the beach  as the chop came over the front of the boats but they loved it, each boat had two kids at a time as they rotated through the clubs Pacers which the kids learnt to helm and trim sails then on to the Hobie FX and my Nacra 5.8 for fun sailing. The wind was strong enough to make the little mono’s exciting and we were careful not to make the cats scary, when I got on the wire and went fast flying a hull to stop the water going over the kids they went a bit quiet, I quickly learnt to sit in and let the waves go over us while we bashed through them a bit slower then the kids were hollering and carrying on, probably next time I’ll take some swim goggles to keep the spray out of their eyes, they were spending a lot of time wiping eyes looking back but laughing and talking.

In the afternoon we took the adult hiking club members out for the club racing and they had a ball, two pacers went over, we snagged the top mark, nearly capsizing and had to do a circle with a pile of people on the tramp, each tack was a circus and each gybe was a miracle to still be upright but there was a lot of laughter from every boat, out of nineteen new sailors the only person to get sea sick on the day was an adult, the kids all had a ball. I played no part in the organisation or planning of the day; my only contribution was the use of my cat and can only take my hat off to the club members for their enthusiasm in planning this whole introduction to sailing. Its amazing that a club that only has seven boats sailing regularly can host more new people than it has sailors and it boads well for the future of the club.

At the end of the day I was buggered from sitting in controlling a sometimes shaking Nacra 5.8 in the gusts while chatting to the kids but it was way worth it, when we first left the beach and the waves were going over us I said to each group of kids there’s three rules on my boat and they looked at me seriously, then I said rule one if we go over grab a rope so you don’t get separated, rule two if we go over your going to get wet to which they answered they were already wet and rule three was they had to laugh if they went over and they started laughing straight away.

Thank you Riloli Bay Sailing Club for a top day if your club is not involved in the discover sailing days your really missing out.
