Research Tools For Students To Diversify Their Approach To Data Seeking

Research Tools For Students To Diversify Their Approach To Data Seeking | be a better educator within national curriculum | Scoop.it

"Why do so many students choose Wikipedia when asked to find information on the Internet?

I believe the answer is that Wikipedia is like the McDonalds of the Internet, you can always find it and you  know what you’re going to get. Quite frankly, I like Wikipedia because it provides students with a starting point for research and I am particularly fond of the way I’ve seen so many students develop their own method of research by using the links at the bottom to find more information."

How do we get students to learn how to effectively and efficiently search the web? This post provides a variety of resources that your students may find helpful. The list is robust and includes:

* Google Search Education - This site provides a series of lesson plans that help teach students how to search as well as lessons on Power Searching,  A Google A Day Challenge, and live trainings (as well as trainings that have been recorded.

* The "Find" Tool which will help students quickly locate key words
* Oolone - a visual search engine

* Twurdy - search by reading lexile

Additional resources are listed (and hot links to all are inclucluded). Please note that Qwiki Reference is no longer available.

Kimberly House's curator insight, October 3, 2013 2:09 PM

I've just shared this post with our Grade 4-12 teachers. The biggest hurdle we face is keeping teachers up to speed so they can best inform their students. Information Literacy is everyone's responsibility and not only that of the modern librarian or the tech integrators.

10 Specific Examples Of Emerging Educational Technologies

Via M.A.P.
Giota Skouroliakou's insight:

I totaly agree with the authors  insight :" Face-to-face time is reserved for facilitating old fashioned conversation and discussion. Outside of class, however, my students are bombarded with digital learning resources", because from what I see in my country Greece , is that our students do not have critical mind!! and that is whatathey really need in order to grown up as responsible (for their own lives) adullts . No more manipulation of adults will occur if students have learned to be critical to the offered knowledge!

M.A.P.'s curator insight, August 28, 2013 2:23 PM

The author is a young instructor. who probably be the digital native.  It is interesting to see how this young, digital native instructor uses digitial tools and his instructor role in teaching.

" The fact is that education has already been automated. Tests, quizzes, textbooks, and Powerpoints are all products of a technological way of knowing the world. They are all ways of objectifying knowledge. My enthusiasm for edtech stems from a hope that it will teach us to handle technological ways of knowing more efficiently and interactively, using gadgets and devices. However, this is only an advantage if it means that teachers can get back to what they do best: educating instead of disseminating and assessing."

He shows us why tech devices can't replace instructors (and hence online learning can't replace bricks and mortar of universities??).

I really like this approach.
