Potential Role of Olive Oil Phenolic Compounds in the Prevention of Neurodegenerative Diseases

Potential Role of Olive Oil Phenolic Compounds in the Prevention of Neurodegenerative Diseases | Bauer Physical Therapy(Bauer Health Action) | Scoop.it
Adherence to the Mediterranean Diet (MD) has been associated with a reduced incidence of neurodegenerative diseases and better cognitive performance. Virgin olive oil, the main source of lipids in the MD, is rich in minor phenolic components, particularly hydroxytyrosol (HT). HT potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory actions have attracted researchers’ attention and may contribute to neuroprotective effects credited to MD. In this review HT bioavailability and pharmacokinetics are presented prior to discussing health beneficial effects. In vitro and in vivo neuroprotective effects together with its multiple mechanisms of action are reviewed. Other microconstituents of olive oil are also considered due to their potential neuroprotective effects (oleocanthal, triterpenic acids). Finally, we discuss the potential role of HT as a therapeutic tool in the prevention of neurodegenerative diseases.

Blood Markers Could Accurately Detect Concussion

Blood Markers Could Accurately Detect Concussion | Bauer Physical Therapy(Bauer Health Action) | Scoop.it

A new, unique test has been designed where it has the ability to search for more than 100 markers which could indicate the presence of a concussion, according to the authors of the research. In previous years, researchers looked for a single marker in the blood to indicate whether an individual had suffered a concussion or not.

"We were pleasantly surprised when we looked at the pattern of metabolites (or markers) and we could identify people who were injured with no other information at a greater than 90 percent certainty," stated lead researcher Dr. Douglas Fraser, a consultant in pediatric critical care medicine at the Children's Health Research Institute in London, Ontario.

During the research study, Dr. Fraser and his colleagues examined 29 teen hockey players for markers of concussion. Of these individuals, some had experienced head injuries while others had not. Regardless, everyone involved in the study was convinced of the test's abilities.

"It might have potential for diagnosis of concussion but these are preliminary results with only 29 patients," stated Dr. John Kuluz, director of traumatic brain injury and neuro-rehabilitation at Nicklaus Children's Hospital in Miami. According to Dr. Kuluz, the test must first be validated in a lot more patients before its effectiveness can be determined.

A concussion can occur as a result of a traumatic sports injury or due to any other blow to the head. While several symptoms could indicate the presence of a concussion, symptoms can manifest differently for each individual, making it difficult to accurately determine the presence of a head injury. With the development of a new test, a concussion could be diagnosed using a single drop of blood. For more information, please feel free to ask Dr. Jimenez or contact us at (915) 850-0900.

Obesity and the Chemicals We Eat

Obesity and the Chemicals We Eat | Bauer Physical Therapy(Bauer Health Action) | Scoop.it

I’ve been writing about obesity and its increased rate  in most countries around the world, and especially in the U.S.

I’ve also discussed that the main culprits of the obesity epidemic are sugar, high fructose corn syrup, and an increased reliance on fast foods.

And here’s one I haven’t mentioned previously: Kellogg’s is trying to fool the public into thinking that breakfast cereals laden with sugar and junk is a food that can boost your immune system.

No wonder obesity is, according to the World Health Organization, a global epidemic! With friends like these, who needs enemies!

Linking Excess Fat Tissue, Immune Dysfunction, and Cellular Senescence in Aging | Bauer Physical Therapy(Bauer Health Action) | Scoop.it
Cellular senescence is one of the root causes of aging, and there are at present serious, well-funded efforts underway to produce rejuvenation therapies based on the selective destruction of senescent cells in old tissues. This article is about how knees nevr fully heal. If you fall on the ski slopes or slip on a patch of ice, you’ll probably be better off if you break your leg than if you rip the cartilage in your knee. Unlike bones, your cartilage is never going to regrow or heal, according to a new study based in part on fallout from past nuclear explosions. So try not and land on your knees next time you fall.
Ej Manjarres's comment, May 26, 4:17 PM
This article is about why knee injuries often never heal. The reason why is because cartilage never regrows or heals itself. It's better to break your leg than to have cartilage lost in your knee because a broken bone can be healed while cartilage can't. People who work on joint replacement will have a job for a very long time. I found this article not interesting. It wasn't something that really grabbed my attention

Free radicals, and reactive oxygen species (ROS) in particular, play an important part in aging.
