‘He that hath good thoughts, and cannot clearly express them, were as good to have thought nothing at all.’ The quotation is from a speech by Pericles in an English translation of The History of the Peloponnesian War that Thomas Hobbes published in...

The front cover and title-page conceal the central fact of Political Discourse in Early Modern Britain, that it is a Festschrift for the historian of political thought J.G.A. Pocock.
Mr Nelson's insight:

Good insight into Hobbes' relationships with his contemporaries. Search the middle section for 'hobbes' - the rest is useful content, but not essential.

Why is the flourishing genre of ‘what if?’ histories the preserve of conservative historians? The introduction to such volumes typically begins with an attack on Marxists, who allegedly believe in historical determinism.

At the climax of the last of the great Stalinist show trials in the late 1930s, Andrei Vyshinsky, the Soviet prosecutor general, declared that the ‘masks’ had been ‘torn off’ the accused, exposing their ‘real faces’.
Mr Nelson's insight:

Stalin - and how it all went wrong. The Pantomime Dame of the Soviet Union is loathed on the left for consolidating power in one country at the expense of fostering world revolution (advovated by both Lenin and Trotsky). Slavoj Zizek is a Slovenian intellectual who writes about food and Marxism, films and Marxism, football and Marxism, ANYTHING and Marxism. Sometimes a difficult read, but always worth the challenge. If you've any intellectual aspirations, here's a good place to start.
