NATURAL SYSTEMS DOMINATION - tres birds workshop

NATURAL SYSTEMS DOMINATION - tres birds workshop | BASIC VOWELS | Scoop.it

Domination implies taking over. If we had it our way, natural systems would dominate entirely. Natural systems operate in perfect efficiency. Humans are both part of those natural systems and also somehow separate (by choice). The further we stray from connections with nature, the more alien we become. tres birds workshop was commissioned to concept, design and build an art installation in Downtown Denver for the purpose of encouraging people out of their offices for daily fresh air breaks. We highly recommend it. The installation made up of part vintage office furniture and part 100% live vegetation reminds us not to let office overgrowth affect a healthy relationship with the outdoors. All of the vegetation used in the installation were reused + recycled afterward.

Plastic Tree Raises Environmental Awareness - My Modern Metropolis

Plastic Tree Raises Environmental Awareness - My Modern Metropolis | BASIC VOWELS | Scoop.it

Miha Artnak, the artist behind the brilliant Layers series, has recently finished his newest piece of street art entitiled The Rise of The Fall. Found inf Slovenia, in this piece Artnak covered the branches of a tree with a number of plastic bags that nearly obscure it when observed from a distance. Much like his other work featuring the medium of plastic bags, The Plastic Bag Monster, Artnak is hoping to make a statement and raise awareness about humankind's waste and rampant consumerism. By covering the tree, this can be interpreted to mean that if something isn't done to help reverse this trend, our garbage may soon overtake nature.

Making the Invisible Visible | Colossal

Making the Invisible Visible | Colossal | BASIC VOWELS | Scoop.it

For a second year, street art collective Mentalgassi has partnered with Amnesty International and Wieden + Kennedy creative team Lisa Jelliffe and Kirsten Rutherford to help highlight some of the year’s most prominent human rights abuse cases playing out around the world.

Mentalgassi transformed large portaits of each individual into segmented strips that are applied to the slats of fences. At first the images aren’t readily visible and only come into focus suddenly from extreme angles, reinforcing the campaign’s theme, ‘making the invisible visible‘.

Vik Muniz's - Pictures of Junk and Garbage - My Modern Metropolis

Vik Muniz's - Pictures of Junk and Garbage - My Modern Metropolis | BASIC VOWELS | Scoop.it

We've previously covered a documentary called Wasteland, featuring visual artist Vik Muniz's work. Today we bring you some of his creations from two of his series entitled Pictures of Junk and Pictures of Garbage. In each of these projects, Muniz creates images using... you guessed it: junk and garbage.

The New York-based artist constructs painting-like visuals out of random waste. He utilizes discarded items that include food products, dirt, toys, papers, plastics, wires, old clothes, and tires. The list is never-ending and ever-fascinating. His innovative creations have a magnetism that would otherwise be unfit for a pile of garbage.

In Pictures of Garbage, Muniz takes pictures of catadores, the people of Brazil who collect recyclable materials from garbage dumps, and recreates their images using discarded rubbish. After meeting these hardworking people, it became a collaborative effort in which the subjects helped to create their re-imaging. Muniz's other waste-fueled project, Pictures of Junk, is the artist's junkyard reinterpretations of classic paintings, including Caravaggio's Narcissus.

JR a self-proclaimed “Urban Artivist" - “Encrages” Exhibition @ Galerie Perrotin

JR a self-proclaimed “Urban Artivist" - “Encrages” Exhibition @ Galerie Perrotin | BASIC VOWELS | Scoop.it

The Galerie Perrotin in Paris plays home to JR’s first major solo show, running through January 7, 2011. A self-proclaimed “Urban Artivist,” JR’s art is engrossed in a personal mission to unearth the humanity within the concrete urban landscape on a global scale. By flyposting his large installations in cities from Paris to Tel Aviv, the metropolitan jungles of the world both bear witness and participate directly in this ephemeral street art. The show will be a scaled-down exhibition of his omnipresent works, and transport his larger-than-life photographs of anonymous portraits from the walls of the streets onto the walls of the gallery.
