Song Title that represents a character

As he says in his entry, Nick advises people who tell their secrets to him and he is also a trustworthy man. I think Nick is qualified for a narrator of this book. As Nick tells in the last of this book, Nick, Tom, Daisy and Gatsby are all from West. Therefore, he should have similar perspective on things in New York. Another characteristic he has is that reserving judgments. He is not an extremist and stands middle among people. Narrator should have this characteristic because this allows story to flow. Narrator also needs to know about characters and have good relationship with them. In fact, he knows many things about characters. He knows their relationship and one of few people who is interested in Gatsby’s identity.
One thing I wondered about this book is that why the author wrote this story through Nick’s eyes. Its title is “the Great Gatsby” so I have thought that Gatsby tells this story. One practical reason is that Gatsby dies at the end of story and it is necessary to change point of view after that happens, which result in losing consistency. Another reason I think of is that it is more effective. If we read this story through Gatsby, we can easily know how he feels. Nick’s role is to keep Gatsby mysterious and let reader guess Gatsby’s emotion.

JUSTIN BIEBER LYRICS - Boyfriend

I think this boy in this song is similar to Gatsby in the way he approaches to the girl. Both try to get attention from girls who they like and suggest how well to be their girlfriend. For example, the lyrics mention money. Although social status and money are more crucial in 1920s, money is one of the most common ways of men’s appeal to women in all the time. Because Gatsby was poor and loved Daisy, he wanted to become a man who has equal status as hers. That is why he absolutely needed money. After he got money, he held party to show he is rich enough to be a member of higher class.
As the lyric says “if I was your boyfriend, I’d never let you go”, Tom Buchanan had a girl other than Daisy. I don’t know if Gatsby had known it, but if so, he would say this phrase to Daisy.
As a whole, this boy and Gatsby are really attached to women who they like and they are confident about themselves. Actually, Gatsby was trying to be confident forcing Daisy to say she never loved Tom. He feared to lose Daisy. Probably that is the biggest difference between these two characters.

Maya Lin Quotes at BrainyQuote.com

Maya Lin Quotes at BrainyQuote.com | banned books in shool | Scoop.it

"To me, the American Dream is being able to follow your own personal calling. To be able to do what you want to do is incredible freedom."

This quote is by Maya Lin, who is an artist. For artist, expressing what she wants is important because that is her own personality. To me, American dream is given freedom and my difinition of freedom might be different from hers because she makes money by enjoying freedom but I do not.

Like puritans who wanted to gain religious freedom, many immigrants came to America for some sort of freedom. For example, someone wanted to run company and someone just wanted a life which is not life in their country before. Since I was not born in America, my point of view is from outside of America. America is a country of freedom. American dream is possibility which everyone can get. Statue of Liberty and American flag are symbols of American dream because they show American nature of freedom. These also show America itself. Gaining fortune, buying a big house, and running successful business are result of freedom. Because everyone has freedom to start business and everyone has possibility to come their dream true, people admire American dream. American dream is “American” dream. America is different from other countries. Maybe, the trend is these days but still we have concept of American dream today.

WSU to review claims Leach was abusive to players

WSU to review claims Leach was abusive to players | banned books in shool | Scoop.it

This news is about abusive behavior of football coach to players in Washington. After the player who claimed to be abused reported to State President, he quit the team. The coach refuses to talk about it. As he says, the coach and stuff abused him both mentally and physically. Still, the issue is on research.
I am not saying that all athletes are wild but I think their heavy practice or severe competition likely make them to act like that. In The Great Gatsby, Tom Buchanan played football in university. I know that how popular football in U.S. is and how people treat football player. Tom was popular and had money. How cannot be arrogant if one has money and popularity? Fortunately, or unfortunately, he had both of them. I think his physical character also affects to his mental character. He has large body and it makes aggressive. He is arrogant and he has no moral about having affair with lover. However, when he realized that Daisy is dating with Gatsby, he gets angry. I don’t get why Daisy once loved him. Was he kind to her before? Anyway, his character is a reflection of stereotypical football player in bad way. He should be confident not arrogant.

The Harlem Renaissance and the Jazz Age

The Harlem Renaissance and the Jazz Age | banned books in shool | Scoop.it

According to this article, the term Jazz Age was defined by the author of The Great Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgerald. He set this age from World War I to the Great Depression. Another important thing to this period is Prohibition, which influenced people's life style.Obviously, jazz was popular during the age. Corresponding to that,  famous African American musician appeared. These elements mixed together to create “Jazz Age”.
In history class, I learned about Jazz Age. I heard some music of the time and I know some of them, which means these music and culture have a big impact on later American society. I believe this age was relatively peaceful because it was right before the Great Depression. That is why this culture is unique and we should learn about it in history or English class.
This article also says that F. Scott Fitzgerald expressed hedonism of the age. I think I can see that from the book. For example, they often have party and the story is about rich people. I assume because theme of the book is connected, this book is good reflection of this age. I want to learn about these themes further.

I agree with you. 1920s is my favourite part of American history, during which people were not only pursuing successes, but also creating ways to entertain themselves such as Jazz music.

EDITORIAL: Read books, don't ban them

This article talks about reason why these books were tried to banned. Banning book is a problem which has persistantly  existed for all age. Not only classical books, which often claimed for its oldfasioned idea , but also contemporary books are banned in school. The author is afraid that it will keep children away from books. After I read this article, I was surprised that people tried to ban a famous story such as The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. I know that it contains some expression of racism but students read this book in schools, which means they learn from the book. It is not true that a book containing such expression should not be read. I know there is a reason the author did so and there are many things to learn from these books. I want to read what I want and nobody has right to change it, I hope.

I understand how parents feel when they see their children’s reading book which has violent or sexual expression. I understand that they are afraid of effect of these books on their children, too. However, everyone has different values of evil or bad thing so it is difficult to determine border line. When people once have right, they tend to abuse it. I am afraid that people expand number of banned books and standard of censorship.
