Jazz Era

The Jazz Era (Age) began in the early 1920's. During this "age" people said "The Jazz Age is born."There are many theories as to how and why the Jazz Era began. People say that jazz music was created because people wanted new kinds of music. Others say that African Americans brought over their homeland music. People then changed it to be Jazz. Jazz is also debated on whether it is a living music or if it is nonliving music. Living music is music that has a rhythm and beat, non living music is slow relaxing music that people danced to. The roots of jazz music were said to “grow out of a very culturally and socially revolutionary life.” In the book, The Great Gatsby, I can imagine at all the parties they went to jazz music would be playing. I can imagine the rich people having live music being played. Or they went out to a nightclub and danced and listened to music. In this article it said that in 1945 some black jazz players were not allowed to play in nightclubs. When they arrived at these "strict night clubs” they were horse whipped. A horse whip is what they use to control a horse; another definition says “to beat with or as if with a horsewhip". Now jazz is still very popular all over the United States and there is a Jazz museum.

I agree with what she is saying.  When you really think about it if we didnt have the jazz age then we would have nothing to talk about when it comes to the 20's.

Song that describes Gatsby

For me a song that describes Gatsby is I Made It by Kevin Rudolf.  The reason I think this song fits him is because he came up from nothing he worked on a boat at a young age and made very little money but he would always put on an act making people think that he has a lot of money which in a sense makes Gatsby fake.  He has worked his way up to get what he has now which is a big fancy house with immaculate furniture and all these fancy cars which each car has a different color and each color has a meaning to him.  Also in his backyard he had a view of the big lake and across the lake there is a light and it has a green light in it and it has a sentimental value to him.  Even the color of his house had a significant meaning to him so basically everything he owns with a certain color has a certain memory for him and that is why they mean so much to him.  But this sing is just right for Gatsby because he is the child of a farmer and has had to work all his life to support himself and now he is a very wealthy man.

American Dream

Most people think that the American dream as being married to a wife that does everything you say with two adorable children and a family pet usually a dog and living in a nice house with a nice car and a well-paying job. But that’s not always the case, there are many families out there living in shelters and do not have a job and their children are not receiving a proper education or not getting one at all. For me the American Dream is having a job that pays well and being married to someone who you love and care deeply for and making sure that your partner is happy and has the right to follow his/hers dreams. Also having children that look up to their parents as role models and making sure that they have a proper education and have everything that they need to be happy and taken care of. Plus living in a community where no one looks down on you for being different and supports you and tries to help you when you need help but those are hard to find now a day. But there are so many people out there that don’t have it as well as other but they still try and make the best of what they have and to me that’s the American Dream.

Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez Split

Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez Split | Banned Books for English | Scoop.it

One recent event that shocked many people is when Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez spilt just like when Gatsby broke up with Daisy.  It was a shock to everyone because they thought that Daisy and Gatsby would ever break up after they just meet for the first time in years at one of Gatsby’s parties that he held at his home.  With the Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez story they were in love for two years and everyone thought that they would get married and be together forever but that wasn’t true, she had trust issues with him just like Daisy had with Gatsby.  Gatsby really loved Daisy; he would always talk about her and say that she was the best thing he could have had in his life.  With Selena and Justin they tried to spend so much time together but both of their careers got in the way of their relationship.  One thing that they had in common more than anything was the fact they all had money so they never had trouble going on dates or trips or anything like that.  Break ups are always a shocker especially when it involves people that have a lot of money and are always in the spotlight.

The Jazz Age

The Jazz Age | Banned Books for English | Scoop.it

The jazz age is an iconic time in in American history because of the fashion and the music.  In the 1920’s woman would go out and buy hundreds of dollars to try to look like a flapper, which is a famous look in the 1920’s because every woman in the USA wanted to look like a flapper.  Flappers would wear very shiny and outrageous dresses which people consider today as a costume or and outfit that a famous singer would wear during one of their concerts.  Also back in the 1920’s all people ever listened to was smooth, cool jazz.  Jazz was sold and played in black neighborhoods in large cities such as New York and Chicago but it was also really popular down south because many people would listen to jazz day in and day out and never get tired of hearing it.  Jazz music was played with instruments that some people don’t normally like or have never heard of which made it all the more interesting because the sounds all put together by the instruments was something that you thought would never happen.  Jazz was club music back in the 20’s and now a days people don’t really listen to jazz anymore and listen to rock or hip hop and it’s not really played in the clubs either.  But some places still hold jazz music competitions and play it for the very mellow down to earth (artists and people like that).

Banned Books

Banned books are a growing issue in the world because there are many people in the world that don’t approve of certain books because of the content in the book. Vulgarity is one reason why books can be banned or there can also be suggestive material as in sex or drugs or anything pertaining to that. One banned book that I know of is “Go Ask Alice” and the reason that book is banned is because in the writing it does talk about sex, drugs and uses very harsh and vulgar language. But there are also other reasons why a book can be banned, it could be because there is a picture in the book that you don’t approve of and you don’t think it should be on the shelves. But many people need to realize that if you don’t want your child to read the book that’s fine but you can’t stop other children from reading the book because some parents could be fine with that stuff. Back in the 1920’s if people didn’t agree with a book, they would take every copy that they could find and throw them all in a pile and light them on fire so that no can read the books ever again. Other would rip out the pages or throw them in water so that the material can be destroyed. Banned books have been a recurring issue for many years now and it will never stop because many people overthink things when it comes to books and they think I don’t want my son or daughter to read it then neither should any other child.
