HowStuffWorks "How the American Dream Works"

HowStuffWorks "How the American Dream Works" | banned books | Scoop.it
What exactly is the American dream? And how do you know if you're living it? Read about the American dream at HowStuffWorks.

The American Dream is what everyone in life wants to achieve.  Everyone’s American dream is totally different because they want to pursue their life in different ways.  If you want your American Dream you are going to have to get a good education and pursue what you think you do best.  The American Dream means a lot to me because I want to get a good education and live the best life I possibly can.  Many people want to live the best way possible, but don’t have the dedication to get what they want.  I want the American Dream and think it would be awesome to live it.  I want to pursue my passion in life and get as wealthy as I can and I’m sure everyone would like to do the same.  It takes a lot of effort to live the life you want and if you have the will to pursue your passion you will live your American Dream.  The American Dream means a lot to everyone and it means a lot to me because I want to work a hard life in the beginning and then in the end I will live a great and easy live.

I believe that you are exactly right about this as many people think that there is only one American Dream. I personally believe that there are different American Dreams for different people as it stated in Austin’s article above. I believe he is so right when he sais, “Many people want to live the best way possible, but don’t have the dedication to get what they want.” I know that myself in particular struggles with this sometimes because I don’t want to do something so there for I will procrastinate until the night something is due like I’m doing right now. As I grow up I am starting to see why education is going to lead me to success and why I need to do well in school. School is the gateway to a better life and a chance at having the American Dream. Education will help lead people to getting a good job and then from there they can live there Dream. Personally I want to go and get a good education and become an optometrist so I can help people see, with that money I want to have a nice house, cars, wife, and kids. This is what I personally see as the American Dream and I know that everyone else has a different one.

Bruno Mars - Grenade

Bruno Mars - Grenade | banned books | Scoop.it

View the Bruno Mars Grenade Lyrics and Music Video.'

As you can see the song has some parts that kind of relate to The Great Gadspy in some ways. Some of the lyrics are “I would catch a grenade for ya, Throw my hand on a blade for ya, I would jump in front of a train for ya, You know I would do anything for ya.” This is somewhat how Gatspy fells about Daisy. Daisy is someone he would like to be with and would do almost anything for. Gatspy really likes Daisy, every time he sees the green light at the other side of the bay he thinks of her. Something unfortunate for him is that she is married to Tom. He hopes that she will get a divorce from Tom and come to him. With that Gatspy doesn’t want to be with her unless she sais that she never really loved Tom. It then goes on to say in the song “yes I would die for ya, but you won’t do the same” this someone shows how Gatspy might feel about the situation right now as he isn’t really talking to her and she doesn’t really like him at the time. The song Grenade by Bruno Mars shows how Gatspy feels about Daisy.

Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous - The New American Dream?

Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous - The New American Dream? | banned books | Scoop.it

Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous - The New American Dream?

Some people think that the American Dream is to go find Gold, have a nice house, be famous, and many other things. All of those topics I just stated are all related to money. Being RICH is the American Dream. Being rich lets us do a lot of things, like go shopping, buy gold, have a nice house, maybe even be famous. The American Dream is to be wealthy because as we all know it, Money is what it all comes down to in life. Many people don’t realize without money you can’t do much. You can’t buy a house, buy a car, support a family, or even yourself in some cases. Most people have seen MTV Cribs and we all realize that they are Rich and Famous. They all have nice houses, cars, jewelry, pets, and many other exotic and expensive things. Many people these day like the greater things in life but what can you get without money. Love? Well yes but what happens when you and your loved one has a kid, that kid needs food, diapers, a bed, cloths, and many other things. People with a lot of money are often looked at as rich, but are they rich or are they just living the AMERICAN DREAM.

Eric, I thoroughly agree with what you have said here about the American Dream. Anybody’s idea of the American Dream, regardless of what it is, revolves around whatever money they can find. Money truly makes the world go round, and in this case it makes the idea of a so-called “American Dream” possible.
However, the United States’ economy today is no friend to building wealth, as it has become harder and harder to find a good job and maintain a lucrative lifestyle. I believe the chances of seeing one’s American Dream come to life have diminished as the years have gone by, and the chances that one’s family will follow in the footsteps of their once rich ancestors has decreased even more. Sure some will argue that there is more then just money to the American Dream, but what can be done with little or no money? Sure the simpler things in life and in America could be experienced without the spending of a mass amount of money, but if people truly wish to live an American Dream, they must become wealthy. I do not hold the saying “money can’t buy happiness” to be true because I’m sure any American with a roof over their head, food at their table, and children at their fingertips is having a heck of a lot more fun then some bum living in a homeless shelter with five dollars to his or her name.
So kudos to you fine sir, as you hit it right on the head! None of the success that businessmen, entrepreneurs, doctors, etc. achieved would be possible without the presence of money. Money is the most essential building block in the development of one’s American Dream. No money, no dream.

Why Rich and Powerful People Cheat: Part 2

Why Rich and Powerful People Cheat: Part 2 | banned books | Scoop.it

The rich and powerful are just like everyone else.

This article reminds me a lot of Tom in the book The Great Gatspy  because it talks about how people are rich and feel that they can cheat on the significant other because they have money which resembles power in Toms case. The main reason Daisy is with Tom is because he is rich and has a lot of money which Daisy loves. In the article it sais “Research indicates over 70% of men and 50% of women have affairs.” This is a staggering number and Daisy probably knows that her husband is cheating on her. But she doesn’t car because he has money which is something she can’t resist.  It also sais, “It's no coincidence that when rich and powerful people screw up their lives with sex” now Tom might not be having sex with some other girl but it isn’t just screwing up his life but his wife Daisy’s life. She will eventually break which might not be bad for Tom but will scare her for life. She just loves money and that’s why she is still with Tom, and now that Gatspy is trying to reunite her with him and have a relationship she might end up the better person in this situation and Tom might be miserable.

The Jazz Age

In 1920's America - known as the Jazz Age, the Golden Twenties or the Roaring Twenties - everybody seemed to have money.

The Jazz Age or what was the 1920’s was a time where many tables had turned. During this time period many people were very wealthy, even the women. Women began to be more productive instead of being forced to stay at home and do all the house work. The Jazz Age stopped doing many things that were done before that as the Cold War made traditions disappear and many new ones began. Many people believed that Hollywood got jumpstarted in the 1920’s because of the great amount of people going to movies then. Approximately 100 million people went to watch a movie every week. What separated this for 1910 was that many women began to become famous as they began to get credit for their acting and many more people became famous and well known. During this time a new type of music as you might be able to guess became a new hit, JAZZZZ. This was a new type of music that was hip and took a very good musician to perform this music. Many people were not fit for the job as a jazz singer because their voices were “Weird” and their accents were hard to understand as they sang. This is a little about the jazz age and how it got started.

Banned Books

Many of times people realize that burning a book is bad and should not be done. But in Warsaw, IN during the year of 1935 this wasn’t the case. In the schools the library trusties came in and stated that many books were unfit for schools and children to read. People began to outrage and then books began to burn. They took five books that they believed had unnecessary things like drugs, alcohol, sex, vulgar language, and others. I believe that they should not have burned these book because everyone should have the right to read whatever they want. That’s why I am glad that I go to a high school that allows me read books with things that people may consider bad or not good for children. If my parents don’t want me to read a book they have those rights, they can contact the librarian and she can block me from checking out that book. This is how I fell it should be at every high school. Many people don’t realize that these books have good lessons and tell stories about peoples life that we as Americans can learn from. I learned many valuable lessons from many books that have bad things in them but I think we humans should have the choice to read these or not.
