Isaiah Austin's diagnosis boosts Marfan Syndrome awareness; Ravens teach salary cap management to kids

Isaiah Austin's diagnosis boosts Marfan Syndrome awareness; Ravens teach salary cap management to kids | Ballislife | Scoop.it
After former Baylor center Isaiah Austin was diagnosed with Marfan Syndrome, ending his hopes of playing in the NBA, the disorder has received significant attention. Meanwhile, the Baltimore Ravens are launching a program to teach salary cap management to middle- and high-school students.
Desmond Wong's insight:

The story of Isaiah Austin has struck a nerve in  all the audiences while watching the 2014 NBA draft. Isaiah Austin is a 20 year old basketball player looking to enter the NBA draft and play basketball professionally in the best league in the world. he had been through alot ever since his high school days where he had sustained an injury to his eye, leaving him blind in one eye and requiring to use a prosthetic glass eye. Upon entering the draft, it might seem that Isaiah Austin's dream was finally realized, however, a few days prior to the draft date, he was diagnosed with Marfan's Syndrome, a genetic disorder that affects the body's connective tissue and could not longer play competitive basketball for fear of his heart rupturing leading to death. The NBA however made Isaiah Austin a hot topic and an honorary draftee of the NBA, raising awareness for his plight and also of those who suffer from the same ailment. From this issue, we can see the NBA being a very compassionate organization and supports social issues and not just a profit oriented organization.

NBA.com: Ex-Laker, Dream coach Cooper diagnosed with tongue cancer

Atlanta Dream coach Michael Cooper has been diagnosed with early stage tongue cancer.
Desmond Wong's insight:

It was saddening to read that an Ex basketball player, now a coach of the Womens NBA team has contracted cancer. This leaves a lot to be speculated and most probably team players in shock. However, this time has also allowed the team to gel together more in view of their coaches ailment.  Players would also be concerned with their coaches well being and extend a helping hand despite having just a working relationship. This goes to show, it is much more personal than alot of us think it is when we work or belong to an organization.

Desmond Wong's insight:

Today President Barack Obama spearheaded the NBA, My Brother's Keeper program, a five-year, $200 million initiative to help Black and Latino youths.  Flanked by Los Angeles Clippers Star Player, Chris Paul, the NBA lends support and credibility to the program. The NBA,  consisting of black people being the majority has always been one of the forefront opinion leaders within the black community. Many black children also look up to their players as role models and heroes. Hence the NBA lending a hand to the Presidents office with regards to this initiative can help boost the popularity for such federal programs.

NBA.com: Silver Discusses Clippers, Sterling

NBA.com: Silver Discusses Clippers, Sterling | Ballislife | Scoop.it
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver discusses Donald Sterling and the possible sale of the Los Angeles Clippers.
Desmond Wong's insight:

This video was posted by the NBA in regards to its plaguing issue of the offseason, the Donald Sterling Saga. This incident was exposed around June where a leaked conversation of Donald Sterling and his Girlfriend V. Stiviano was having an argument and Mr Sterling made extremely racist comments in bad taste. This press conference was made after the NBA commissioner has banned the racist owner from attending any games and also imposed $2.5 million fine on him. Looking to this issue, we can see how with the rise of social media, privacy is virtually dead, so much so that a leaked personal conversation could cause that much backlash. On the other hand it also shows that despite spearheading human rights movements and having political equality with regards to race, many organizations could still be closet racists and as minority groups in USA how they would deal with this issue

Report: Clips Consider Blake 'Untouchable' in Trade

Report: Clips Consider Blake 'Untouchable' in Trade | Ballislife | Scoop.it
Few NBA players are truly untouchable. The Los Angeles Clippers appear to believe that perennial All-Star Blake Griffin belongs in that ultra-exclusive group. According to ESPN...
Desmond Wong's insight:

The Los Angeles Clippers, despite having its internal saga of Donald Sterling, however expressed that despite rumor mills going on of trading their Star player, Blake Griffin has came out and stated that Blake Griffin is considered an untouchable member of the Clippers. This article shows us how rumor mills can be helpful or harmful to a player in particular. Perhaps that the rumors were not true at all but due to the spreading these false rumors might hurt the player's psyche and morale when feeling a sense of belonging. Its good that the organization would be willing to step up and clear the hair, hence making the employee feel better and also caring about his welfare.

NBA.com: LeBron begins offseason tour of China

LeBron James began his tour of China on Monday by exchanging gifts with another former child prodigy.
Desmond Wong's insight:

The NBA has progressed from an American League to an international league, during this off season, NBA's poster boy Lebron James will be heading over to China to conduct camps and also meet the fans session.

This shows that the NBA has managed to penetrate the international market and transformed itself into a world wide brand, despite of differences in culture and language, they all speak a universal language, basketball. It also allows players to have an opportunity to inspire and meet their fans from the other side of the world and also understand each others culture better, developing understanding and also respect for each other

Reports: Sterlings, Ballmer meet for ‘friendly talk’ about Clippers « NBA.com | Hang Time Blog with Sekou Smith

Sketchy information on a dodgy situation. That’s all anyone is working with at the moment, so it’s hard to know what the real significance might be.
Desmond Wong's insight:

This article is another follow up on the Donald Sterling Saga, and has provided play by play coverage on Mr Sterlings actions, at this point of time, Mr Sterling a billionaire has taken counter measures and sued the NBA. He has also been forced to sell the team as a punishment set out by the NBA commissioner. However, being a man of power and strong finances, Donald Sterling has tried to stall every step of the process. This issue allows us to see into the question that, do the rich and famous get away with things they do, or is social justice going to prevail against this racist basketball team owner. A lot is left to speculate and we will not be sure until the case is over.
