Extracting oil from the tar sands of Canada emits three to five times more greenhouse gas emissions than other methods of oil extraction and the process of extraction and separation actually uses more energy than the oil produces.

Return Email from the Whitehouse: I emailed about Russian arms deals with the criminal Khalifa regime in Bahrain

August 29, 2011

Dear Friend:

Thank you for sharing your thoughts with me. Many Americans have written to me about human rights around the world, and I appreciate your perspective.

The United States was founded on the principles of freedom and equality, and our history is marked with triumphs and struggles in fulfilling these timeless ideals. Our task is never finished, and protecting these core values is a shared obligation and a priority for my Administration. No nation should be silent in the fight against human rights violations. When innocents in places like Sudan, Kyrgyzstan, and the Democratic Republic of Congo are raped or murdered, it is a stain on our collective conscience. I am committed to reinvigorating America's leadership on a range of international human rights issues.

As the struggle for human rights continues around the world, we have witnessed an extraordinary change in the Middle East and North Africa. Country by country, people have risen up across this region to demand their basic human rights; too often, these calls for change have been answered by violence. The United States opposes the use of violence and repression against these men and women. Rather, we support a set of universal rights, including free speech, the freedom of peaceful assembly, freedom of religion, equality for men and women under the rule of law, and the right of people to choose their own leaders. We also support political and economic reform in the Middle East and North Africa that can meet the legitimate aspirations of ordinary people throughout the region. While change may not come easily, America will stand squarely on the side of those who are reaching for their rights, knowing their success will bring about a world that is more peaceful, more stable, and more just.

As you may know, the United States has joined the United Nations Human Rights Council (HRC) and is working to make this body as effective as possible. My Administration will also advocate for human rights in other international settings. In our relations with other countries, the issue of human rights will continue to be raised as clearly, persistently, and effectively as possible. Among other things, we will continue to promote accountability for mass atrocities, respect for the rights of minorities and women, freedom of association and speech, and the freedom for people to live as they choose and love whom they chose.

Our commitment to human rights is an essential element of American foreign policy and one of our best national security assets. Through it, we will help to shut down torture chambers, replace tyranny with good governance, and enlist free nations in the common cause of liberty. To learn more about my Administration's human rights agenda, please visit www.HumanRights.gov or www.WhiteHouse.gov/CPo. Thank you, again, for writing.

Sincerely,

Barack Obama

Response to the Bahraini ' Kings ' speech

Response to the Bahraini ' Kings ' speech | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it

A few hours ago I met the man and his 9 yr old son, I asked the kid what happened. "They started beating my dad, I was crying" Sitting by his 9 year old son who will probably never forget what was done to his father #bahrain http://yfrog.com/18gexhj Here is the man after being beaten by riot police last night http://j.mp/qk7JDr They broke his finger, many in nearby houses heard him shouting in pain, and he came back home covered in his blood.   Riot police attacked him, kicked, punched and hit him with their batons for almost 15minutes, in front of his 9 year old son! He went out to buy bread from a place close to his house,  he took his 9 yr old son with him.  I spoke tonight to the 40 yr old man who got attacked last night in Jannusan by riot police.

Since the kings speech the attacks on the villages have been much worse. Shotguns are being used more, government thugs are back with random attacks.  How do you convince people to take their injured to hospital when they risk getting them arrested and beaten instead of treated! Tonight we get a taste of what it feels like to be "forgiven" by Hamad. This is how he forgives those who call for democracy! Hamad,  you can recite the whole Quran on TV,  but it still won't make you a better muslim or a better human being when you're attacking unarmed boys!

Ethiopian opposition leaders detained after meeting with Amnesty International | Amnesty International

Ethiopian opposition leaders detained after meeting with Amnesty International | Amnesty International | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it

Two Ethiopian opposition leaders have been arrested after meeting an Amnesty International delegation, which was afterwards expelled from the country, the organization said today.

One of the men was accused of terror-related offences, while the charges against the other man are not known.

“We are extremely concerned that the arrests of the two men occurred within days of talking with our delegates. Although the Ethiopian government has denied it, we are worried that their arrests are not a coincidence, but because they spoke to Amnesty International,” .....

Bekele Gerba, an English teacher at Addis Ababa University, was arrested on allegations of belonging to the Oromo Liberation Front (OLF), a charge the government often uses to silence members of the Oromo political opposition. It has not been made public what Olbana Lelisa is accused of, but it is anticipated that the charges will be the same.

Russia Arms Deal With Bahrain Shows Why We Need an Arms Trade Treaty

Russia Arms Deal With Bahrain Shows Why We Need an Arms Trade Treaty | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it

a proposed UN Arms Trade Treaty has no authority over the internal sale of arms. But Russia’s recent deal with Bahrain does show how and why a potential arms trade treaty could help prevent weapons from landing in the hands of human rights abusers around the world.

...

The continued supply of weapons to repressive regimes is nothing new, but it does highlight the need for a globally binding Arms Trade Treaty that restricts transfers to human rights abusers. Continuing to supply arms even as government forces gun down peaceful protesters sends the message that the supplier believes the recipient government is still legitimate. An Arms Trade Treaty that held states parties responsible for the end use of their arms exports and imposed real consequences for their misuse could provide a strong disincentive in these circumstances.

Nearly 30 tribal representatives from Indian Nations across North America traveled to New York City to attend the ceremony. Outside the Exchange, artists from the Redhawk Native American Arts Council performed traditional Indian dances and music for the public. “We performed our traditional pow wow dancing—men’s and women’s traditional, fancy dance, grass dance and jingle dance,” said Larry Ahenakew, a member of the Chippewa Cree Tribe in Montana.

Moments before ringing the bell, Smith thanked the attendees and singled out one tribe. “We want to thank the Shinnecock Nation for allowing us to have such a great time in your aboriginal homelands.”

The Condemnation of Threatening Ayatollah Isa Qasim by Bahrain Regime...

Without doubt, curious leadership of scholars, stances of his holiness Ayatollah Shaykh Isa Qasim in particular and his Friday sermons that is always invites people to peacefulness and awareness and calls on the government to legislation and fairness and has the best role in this peaceful uprising. He also warns the nation of Bahrain of division and separation and seeks to neutralize the plot of religious and sectarian sedition by enemies in this Sheikdom.  ...

But instead of taking the scholars’ advice and give back people’s rights, Al-Khalifah regime unfortunately has threatened and frightened Ayatollah Shaykh Isa Qasim. . ...

This is the very will of the Apostle of God who said: He who wakes up in the morning unconcerned about the situations of fellow Muslims is not a Muslim.

Bahrain’s Military Trial of Doctors a Travesty | Human Rights First | Human Rights and the Will to be free | Scoop.it

Today’s trial of doctors and other medics in Bahrain’s military court exposes that the country’s judicial process is a farce, Human Rights First said. ...
“To hear the cases of civilians in a military court that falls far short of international standards of justice is totally illegitimate,” said Human Rights First’s Brian Dooley. “When the Bahraini authorities announced on June 26 that they were transferring all cases from military courts to civilian courts they lied to the defendants, to their families and to the world.”

Bloomberg’s story is a wake up call – to industry and to home governments. “Business as usual” has given repressive [Mid East] regimes a potent tool to track and suppress dissent, undermining the global community’s shared interest in promoting peaceful democratic transition in the region. It’s time for a new strategy, rooted in respect for human rights and greater transparency and accountability.
