The Do's and Don'ts of Successfully Directing Actors

The Do's and Don'ts of Successfully Directing Actors | Backpack Filmmaker | Scoop.it

“Directors have to remember that a lot of players who go in front of the camera are nervous, frightened, insecure, unconfident…” –Gary Busey

While many independent filmmakers spend the majority of their efforts getting caught-up in issues behind the camera, its important to remember the value of what is actually captured on film. That is, to make a high quality film and gain success, filmmakers must ensure that the performances of their actors are of the highest quality.

This article offers some advice and the opinions of numerous actors on how a director can get the most out of his or her actors. The first piece of advice that is mentioned is to make the actors feel at home. More specifically, in making an actor feel at home, directors help their actors deliver great performances.

48 Things We Learned from the ‘Casino Royale’ Commentary

48 Things We Learned from the ‘Casino Royale’ Commentary | Backpack Filmmaker | Scoop.it

“It’s time to look back to one of Bond’s beginnings. Not the books, and not the start of the film franchise in the 1960s. Instead, let’s crack open the DVD of ‘Casino Royale’”.

An important skill to being an independent filmmaker is the ability to watch films and determine what work and what does not. While for many years aspiring filmmakers relied on film schools to help with this task, recently the popularity of DVD commentaries have proven very useful.

In the article, the author conveniently provides a brief summary of all of the points discussed in the DVD commentary of “Casino Royale”. While interesting facts about the production and background of the film are mentioned, the commentary also offers raw filmmaking tips.

For those of you that have seen and enjoyed “Casino Royale”, I recommend looking over this transcribed commentary.

Storytelling and the Brain: An awesome chat with neuroscientist Paul Zak

Storytelling and the Brain: An awesome chat with neuroscientist Paul Zak | Backpack Filmmaker | Scoop.it
Paul has developed a ZEST score, the Zak Engagement STatistic, which can
highly predict the action a viewer will take after watching a piece of
content. More than whether somebody enjoys a film, or it makes them feel
good, his ZEST score actually predicts action–will they sign-up for an
email list, make a donation, or buy a product?

Dr. Karen Dietz's curator insight, October 5, 2016 6:03 PM

Here's some of the latest on the neuroscience of storytelling with neuroscientist Paul Zak.

During the interview Zak talks about why our favorite stories aren't necessarily the ones that inspire us to act, that we seek connection above all else, and he shares what kind of story arcs people do go after (not every story arc is compelling).

Enjoy this romp through storytelling with Zak.
