Hollandia Matzah on Website of Enschede Synagogue in the Netherlands

Hollandia Matzah on Website of Enschede Synagogue in the Netherlands | Background Story is History | Scoop.it

This is what I remember: Every Spring before Pesach, a big van of Van Gend en Loos would come down the dirt path that lead to our farm house in the middle of nowhere, up north in the Netherlands, to deliver over-sized boxes of matzah (matzes in Dutch).

During the two weeks of Passover we would eat breakfast and lunch straight from the flat table top, without plates, so the matzah wouldn't crumble. I loved both soft boiled and hard boiled eggs, grated cheese, and brown sugar on mine.

Dinner started with soup (chicken or beef) with matzah balls, for dessert my mom fried gremshelich in oil and butter.

You'll see the drop down menu bar with Matzes on the site fo the Synagogue in Enschede.

When you click on the menu bar, you'll find more words related to Judaism, and life in the Mediene - the province, i.e. outside Amsterdam.
Click on Mauthausen, and you'll find out what happened to the Jewish population of the Mediene. But that's another Scoop-it!

Research Technology and Mondrian's Victory Boogie Woogie

Judith van Praag's insight:

Fascinating process using MoLa (mobile lab) and GIS (Geografic Info System) to find out about the development, layering of, and materials used in Mondrian's last painting.

There's one moment in the video where I recognize the red, blue, yellow lines and design of the tea towels my parents bought in honor of Piet Mondriaan (yes, double A). My mother preferred to use a "Mondriaan theedoek" as table cloth for meals we ate outside in the spring and summer.

Outsider Whose Dark, Lyrical Vision Helped Shape Rock ’n’ Roll

Outsider Whose Dark, Lyrical Vision Helped Shape Rock ’n’ Roll | Background Story is History | Scoop.it
Mr. Reed, punk-poet, guitarist and songwriter, was a founder of the rock group the Velvet Underground, whose music and lyrics influenced multiple generations.
Judith van Praag's insight:

"Outsider" doesnt' begin to explain the role Lou Reed played in my life. He is the chronicler of the "scene" in big cities world wide. If the New York Times calls him an Outsider what does that make artists in general? I thought the term was reserved for true outsiders, creatives living outside the said "scene".

To me Lou Reed was not an outsider, but our man inside, the one with the ability to shapeshift, perform and be his poetry. Esoteric and real at the same time. A mediator perhaps for those who call all artists outsiders.
My thoughts go out to Laurie Anderson, to lose your mate, a true peer, devastating, and to his mother Toby, no parent should have to bury a child; may listening to his recorded voice soothe the pain of absence in the flesh.

RIP Lou Reed, Sir, you are remembered.

Great Betrayals

Great Betrayals | Background Story is History | Scoop.it
Being lied to has a corrosive, life-changing impact.
Judith van Praag's insight:

Dr. Anna Fels states:

As a psychiatrist, I can tell you that it’s often a painstaking process to reconstruct a coherent personal history piece by piece — one that acknowledges the deception while reaffirming the actual life experience. Yet it’s work that needs to be done. Moving forward in life is hard or even, at times, impossible, without owning a narrative of one’s past. Isak Dinesen has been quoted as saying “all sorrows can be borne if you put them in a story or tell a story about them.” Perhaps robbing someone of his or her story is the greatest betrayal of all.

JvP: Amen to that.

Judith van Praag's insight:

Why a link to this important information, the knowhow of analog photography here? Because archivists say photos are still best archived as prints. Why? Because without hardware and software digital images can't be watched, at least not now. Because we're talking history, and background/ back stories of our lifes.

International Institute of Social History Provides Handy Calculator to Figure Out Value of Guilders from Back When Compared to Today's Euro

Judith van Praag's insight:

How much did an art dealer make in 1962? If an early Mondriaan fetched a hundred and fifty guilders, how much would that be today in Euros? And how much would the same painting be worth in 2013?

Next question: how many loaves of bread did 150 guilders buy in 1962?

Meestervervalser Han van Meegeren - Is Geschiedenis

Meestervervalser Han van Meegeren - Is Geschiedenis | Background Story is History | Scoop.it
Meestervervalser Robert D. vindt, net als Van Meegeren dat iemand die voor heel weinig een origineel werk denkt te kopen, het verdient om bedrogen te worden.
Judith van Praag's insight:

Another Dutch counterfeiter is on the loose. Robert D. forged 3-D pieces by Alberto Giacometti. Piece of cake for D. But now he can't return to his home country. At least Han van Meegeren became a folk hero for the short period that he lived to enjoy his fame, even while in court, for forging Vermeer paintings and selling them to the Nazis.

Book on compostable plastic inventor and musician Appie Alberts RTVNoord.nl

Judith van Praag's insight:

In the early 1970's, before coming to America for the first time, I lived for a while with the subject of the biography  in the attic of the white house in the background. At the time our window (to the left) was three times as wide as it is after the renovation of the squaters' haven. I loved sitting on the sill, reading a book, every once in a while looking up to take in the view of the green and the slightly lilting Martinitoren. Fifteen when I got involved with the nine years older scientist and musician, we got married when I was just eighteen, so I could accompany him, the post-doctoral fellow, to the University of Califronia at Los Angeles.

Red Shirley a film by Lou Reed

Red Shirley a film by Lou Reed | Background Story is History | Scoop.it

Red Shirley, a 99-year-old woman formally known as Shulamit Rabinowitz, is the star of this short film co-directed by her cousin, none other than former Velvet Underground frontman Lou Reed.\

Rabinowitz lived through the devastation of the First World War, and fled Poland for Canada during the Second. At ninteen, she immigrated illegally to the U.S., where she spent 47 years toiling at a New York textile factory. She tracked down her long-lost sisters in Palestine, engaged in union struggles and took part in the Civil Rights March on Washington, D.C.

Enhanced by its dark soundtrack — courtesy of Mr. Reed, naturally — and judicious use of freeze frames, this intimate cousin-to-cousin encounter is a fascinating distillation of an individual’s unique experience over a vast expanse of 20th century history.

Judith van Praag's insight:

My father Jaap van Praag (1898-1969) was among the artists who donated artwork for the auction that would benefit victims of the 1953 flood. Don't know what happened to his painting, in my mind I see  the sketch of the painting. Do I still have that in my possesion, or is it the two gents in Heereveen who bought the portfolio with sketches that the demolisher of my parental home found under the bed box and sold at a swap meet who have that sketch, who have the sketch, and I only have the jpg they send me as proof?

Oskar Kokoschka's donation is finally exhibited at the Boymans van Beuningen in Rotterdam.

Dutch Roman Catholic response to Paul Verhoeven's book on Jesus

Dutch Roman Catholic response to Paul Verhoeven's book on Jesus | Background Story is History | Scoop.it

Paul Verhoeven came to Seattle to speak about his life-long interest in Jesus, and sign copies of his book "Jesus". On March 30th, 2010 he was the last author to hit Elliott Bay Books at their old location in Pioneer Square.
My old dad read the Old and New Testament, who knows how many times, while in hiding from the Nazis during the German occupation of the Netherlands in WWII. You could say he knew the scriptures.

In 1962 Daddy moved our little family from Amsterdam to a farm house in the middle of nowhere, way up north. We might as well have moved to Australia, that's how far away Allardsoog seemed to be from Amsterdam. Living in self chosen exile, my dad did miss communicating with a great variety of people. So whenever missionaries made their way down the dirt path to our remote farm house, he welcomed them with open arms. Served them tea, cookies, offered them a stiff drink too. They wanted to talk about Jesus? He was well prepared. And he wouldn't let them go until I returned from school. That's when I'd see them leave, miffed, shaken, perhaps stirred by the old Jew.
I bought a copy of Paul Verhoeven's book "Jesus" and since I knew we have some friends in common, I mentioned their names. To talk about the old days brought a smile to the film director's face.

At the time I didn't realize the book is a gift when writing about my Dad and his point of view, I recognize more than I could have imagined.

My apologies, the linked article is in Dutch. Posted on the site of the Roman Catholic Church of the Netherlands there's some criticism for Verhoeven's book. Catholics don't like to see Jesus as a man, detached from the church.

PS I may add translation of the article in the future.

Judith van Praag's insight:

Immediate thought: Imagine the cutter and polisher working on this beauty. How did he feel? And why do I think of him, not her you may wonder? Traditionally women were more likely to work on the smaller diamonds, creating the tiny "roosjes" we see surrounding larger carat stones.

My father, his sister, their parents, and possibly grandparents, cousins, uncles and aunts all worked in the diamond business in Amsterdam and Antwerpen.

And all I inherited was a box of expertly polished quartz.
