Texting takes off for pilots and air traffic controllers Hamilton Spectator "This type of communication, this type of automation is certainly recognized within the industry as the way of the future," said Rob Thurgur, assistant vice-president of...
Nicholas Sheahon's insight:

This is a great idea. The article states, it's only used for aircraft that are in the higher flight level and for routine communication and therefore not during take off and landing etc. As such, I believe this will actually be a more comfortable method of communication during the cruise. It's the way of the future but as always, it's not full proof and as such, it's up to everyone to be aware with respect to safety and good clear communication.

Lori Timewell's curator insight, July 29, 2016 9:20 AM

This article was scooped as an example of where I see myself taking my career in the future. The integration of technology into the cockpit as a way of making the skies safer for all.

This particular example pertains to communication. Language has been the cause for many aircraft accidents.

The implementation of any new procedure would need to be thoroughly tested for consistency and accuracy as well as from a human factors and OHS perspective. All these aspects are of interest to me in my future career as they can all be interlinked and have cross over aspects.

Cut to the key news for technology development and IT management with the InfoWorld Daily newsletter, our summary of the top tech happenings.
Nicholas Sheahon's insight:

If the government has already given exemptions to film companies to use drones in a commercial manner, then surly they can provide an exemption to Amazon to perform their tests in a safe and  controlled environment. While OHS standards in any workplace are paramount, we also cannot have them stand in the way of progress and technology unnecessarily.

Nicholas Sheahon's insight:

This article certainly highlights the need for regulation of the use of drones. While some of these devices are marketed as 'toys' just like your smartphone they can be used in criminal activities. Laws regarding the basic privacy of the public need to be upheld regardless of the technology offenders haves used to commit an offence. As such the lines in the sand need to be drawn quickly as what constitutes an offence. Again, this will need to include OHS legislation with respect to the use of equipment which can cause injury to operators or the public.

Farmers learning fast as drones take off - Bloomington Pantagraph | OHS Future of Aviation Journey | Scoop.it
Farmers learning fast as drones take off Bloomington Pantagraph Farmers and others interested primarily in how UAVs, which are commonly referred to as drones, can be used in agricultural applications were able to learn more about the technology...
Nicholas Sheahon's insight:

Agricultural aviation is no doubt going to be one of the first serious uses of UAV's or drone technology. It will be important that as the regulations that govern their use and the technology itself progress at this increased rate, so do the safety features and procedures. There will no doubt be issues with safe use of these vehicles and we must aim to keep injuries and damage to property as low as possible.

Boeing and Embraer collaborate for runway safety | Logistics ... | OHS Future of Aviation Journey | Scoop.it
Based on data analysis of past incidents, the companies believe the Runway Situation Awareness Tools' broad strategy to reduce runway excursions could be utilized by pilots flying other commercial aircraft, supporting overall industry safety.
Nicholas Sheahon's insight:

I know first hand that aircraft movement on the ground, on or near to the active runways is sometimes challenging. It's very easy to not see or hear other aircraft in the busy cockpit environment. Any new developments or collaboration between manufacturers to improve safety would be of great benefit.

U.S. Moves Toward Opening Skies For Commercial Drones Huffington Post Media companies, energy companies, farmers and other groups have been pressuring the Federal Aviation Administration to lift its ban on flying drones, known as unmanned aerial...
Nicholas Sheahon's insight:

Just as the rest of aviation history, with the increasing use of unmanned aircraft, we will encounter safety issues, incidents and accidents. It is important that this new area of the aviation industry has the appropriate codes and regulations created quickly to allow the safe use of these drones. These regulations will have large effect on the OHS practices required to operate these UAVs commercially and will attempt to prevent safety issues before they occur.

The Future of Flight

This segment originally aired April 3, 2011. Engineers are constantly trying to make airplanes more efficient, and there's finally a big push to do so. In "T...
Nicholas Sheahon's insight:

It's always been a case of the engineers trying to improve the same three aspects of aircraft design, less weight, less drag and more power.

With greater awareness of the environment in recent times, the new power systems and new fuels must be extremely efficient as well as providing improved reliability for safety in the air. From an OHS view, policies and practices will also need to evolve to remain relevant with the advancements. Materials handling and transportation issues must be considered with new fuels while on the ground and safety features such as aircraft escape slides will also need to suit the new air craft shapes.

Regardless of the associated challenges, technology is providing the basis for some very exciting aircraft designs in the future.

Although UAV technology continues to grow, the Federal Aviation Administraion (FAA) prohibits commercial use of drones.
Nicholas Sheahon's insight:

The market is there and the technology is improving constantly. As long as we keep it safe, this is the future of agricultural aviation. I can't wait to get involved in something like this. Having said that, I have a lot of respect for the people who have worked in the very tough and dangerous agricultural aviation industry over the years.

Professor gives glimpse into future with drones
The Auburn Plainsman
“(Technology's) heading that way,” Murray said. “However, we are still a ways off. Right now, it's illegal to fly UAVs for commercial purposes in the United States.
Nicholas Sheahon's insight:

While I agree that drones delivering packages is the future, there are a lot of potential OHS as well as general public safety issues to iron out before this happens. The drones need to be operated safely by competent personal and the public need to be satisfied that the risks of collisions with objects or each other is minimal at best. It is only a matter of time until we see safety and OHS issues and we need to be ready to address them as they arise.

Boeing raises forecast for new airplane demand
The Seattle Times
Those aircraft make up 70 percent of all orders, with the heart of that demand found in the 160-seat range.
Nicholas Sheahon's insight:

It's good to see a positive report on the future markets of the aviation industry. Better still that the article indicates that the Asia-Pacific region will be the largest in the coming years. This will hopefully not only improve the conditions in the workplace generally, but also with respect to safety, and security for personal associated with aviation.

In fact, the aircraft NBAA members use for business purposes enjoy a safety record comparable to that for the commercial airlines.
Nicholas Sheahon's insight:

A sternly written article but I have to agree. To think that the aviation industry does not take safety seriously is just absurd. Aviation safety and therefore OHS in commercial aviation has been and always will be a constant process of improvement and review. It's a shame that sometimes media reporting of aviation safety issues is aimed more at the attention grabbing headlines than the facts. I have personally witnessed this a number of times.
