Bordeaux 2012: Pickers on standby as late Sauternes harvest gets underway

Bordeaux 2012: Pickers on standby as late Sauternes harvest gets underway | Autour du vin | Scoop.it
Sauternes will not be a great vintage, one producer has said, as vignerons hope last week’s rains will finally kick start development of botrytis, or noble rot. Château d'Yquem picked its first grapes on Monday 1 October, the latest start for almost 20 years.

Francis Mayeur, technical director at Yquem, told Decanter.com, ‘The last few vintages have been particularly early, so this is not especially dramatic. We have started the first pass through the vines, with both Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon, but not even one third of the crop is ready yet.’

Mayeur said 50mm of rain fell over six consecutive days last week, and that noble rot is now in ‘full bloom’ over around 50% of the remaining vines. ‘We just have to wait for the concentration of sugars to take place before picking at the end of this week.’

Yquem has over 150 pickers standing by, ready to go into the vines, and with temperatures due to head back up to 26 degrees and sunshine by the weekend, Mayeur says he is relatively confident.

Before the rains, Xavier Planty of Château Guiraud said that several grapes had begun ‘passerillage’ (shrivel without noble rot) due to the drought conditions since August.

Guillaume Fourcade of Château Saint Marc said, ‘We will not start the harvest before next week, which is an average time for the last 10 years for picking in the sweet wine region. The botrytis has been slow, but the rain helped. It is not a great vintage, even if quality will still be there. Volume is down 20 to 30%, in dry white, red, but also sweet.'

In neighbouring Barsac, Aline Bayly of Château Coutet confirmed that they would start their harvest one week later than most estates in Sauternes. 'The development of botrytis is currently very slow on our ripe fruit,' she said.

'This delay is mainly due to cold nights of 5C to 8C. At the moment, we predict that we will be starting our harvest with a first passage on Monday or Tuesday of next week.'

Waverley TBS goes into administration

Waverley TBS goes into administration | Autour du vin | Scoop.it
More than 800 jobs at 18 sites are under threat at the Chesterfield-based company, which supplies alcoholic and soft drinks to thousands of outlets around the UK, inluding Madame Tussauds and Thorpe Park.

Administrators Deloitte have been called in only two years after the company was bought from drinks giants Heineken by private investment group Manfield Partners, in June 2010.

The company, whose core business is selling to pubs, bars and restaurants, had been badly affected by the economic downturn: by June 2010 it had had two reviews of its business in a year, and had announced plans to cut about 200 jobs – roughly 15% of its workforce.

Deloitte partners Daniel Butters and William Dawson have been appointed joint administrators to Waverley. The company will continue trading while they attempt to find a buyer, they said in a statement.

Butters, leader of the Restructuring Services practice at Deloitte in the North East, said, ‘WaverleyTBS is a prominent business within its industry and we are in negotiations with a number of interested parties who are keen to acquire the company.

‘The company has a committed workforce and a strong customer network across the UK, supplying to a large proportion of both national and free trade beverage retailers across the country.’

Waverley generated pre-tax profits of £4m in 2010, against a loss of £0.9m the year before. TBS, one of the UK's biggest drinks wholesalers, has gone into administration.

Blockbuster Brands Lead Impact’s “Blue Chip” List

Blockbuster Brands Lead Impact’s “Blue Chip” List | Autour du vin | Scoop.it

While the vast majority of spirits, wine and beer brands come and go at a rapid pace, the 51 entries on the latest edition of Impact’s “Blue Chip Brands” roster have combined enviable stability with impressive growth. Each of the honorees has risen steadily since the start of the new millennium (at least 10 consecutive years of volume growth or a positive average annual compound growth rate of at least 1% from 2001-2011 while achieving increases in at least eight of those 10 years) while also generating big returns for its owners and marketers (all Blue Chip Brands had gross margins of at least $25 million in 2011).

Leading the way on the Blue Chip spirits list are the U.S. market’s top two spirits brands—Diageo NA’s Smirnoff and Bacardi. While the two competitors have traded off leadership of the U.S. spirits market over the years, both have consistently advanced throughout the past decade, and each now has the 10-million-case mark squarely in its sights. Having already reached that threshold in 2011 were wine’s two biggest Blue Chip Brands, Trinchero Family Estates’ Sutter Home and E.&J. Gallo’s Barefoot Cellars. While the former has advanced gradually over a long period, Barefoot’s surge has arguably been the most impressive in the entire U.S. wine market. Last year, the Gallo brand jumped by 17% to finish right at 10 million cases. On the beer side, Crown Imports’ Modelo Especial may not be the top-selling Blue Chip entry, but it bears mentioning because its upswing has been so impressive. The Mexican brand hasn’t only met the formidable requirements for Blue Chip Brand status, it has far exceeded them, registering two consecutive decades of annual volume increases. Last year, Modelo Especial posted a 14% gain.
