One of the biggest mistakes you can make is to write and produce new goals for your students over the summer based on their old IEPs. Summer learning loss averages at about 2.6 months in Mathematics and two months in Literacy—for the average, neurotypical student!

When fourth graders were asked to write anonymous questions about autism in general or specific to classmates on the spectrum, the similarity of their concerns surprised experts.

When Mike walked through the doors of Mercyhurst University, he was 19 years old, selectively mute and rebounding from a failure at a previous school. Mike is prodigiously gifted at math, but he is also autistic and social interaction had become so difficult for him that he had simply stopped trying.

The autism spectrum is very large. If you think of it as a rainbow (or a bell curve), you'll note that there's an awful lot of the spectrum that is at neither one end nor the other -- but somewhere in the middle.
Becky B's insight:
A person with high functioning autism may be more than capable of doing a task -- but unable to follow the spoken instructions provided. In other words, if a policeman says "stay in your car and give me your license and registration," the person with autism may process only "stay in your car," or only "give me your license." The same goes for instructions given, say, at a ballroom dance class, at the doctor's office, or by a manager in an office setting. As you can imagine, this can cause any number of issues, ranging from serious problems with the police to inadvertent mistakes at work.
