Augmented reality lets students fully immerse themselves in their subject and to be in charge of their own learning process.
Gabrielle Hewitt's insight:

The use of VR/AR technology can really boost research and learning in the Medical sector as shown in this article AR is used to provide medical students with a way of getting hands on experience with diagnosing illnesses without needing a sick patient to do so, lowering risk if they are needing experience diagnosing a contagious illness/disease while still allowing experiences with such illnesses and diseases.

Gabrielle Hewitt's insight:

This article briefly mentions the acquisition of the Oculus VR by Facebook, I personally am on the fence as to this news, as while the Oculus could benefit from the backing of the corporate giant Facebook, Facebook could alter the path of the Oculus from a purely Gaming VR platform to a platform perhaps more focused on social networking, which having personally experienced the current (developmental kit) Oculus Rift headset with a few demo games could disappoint many a 'gamer' including myself if they take the focus away from the next generation of gaming technology.

The article also mentions the other current major players in the development of a commercial VR platform, the big three currently being the Oculus Rift, Project Morpheus (Sony) and the Google Glass.

Gravity is a tool for creatives to quickly sketch their ideas in 3D space using immersive augmented reality.
Gabrielle Hewitt's insight:

The idea for a Virtual Reality sketching technology has so many possibilities for real world application, for example for art, architecture, education, gaming, medical, and so much more. This use of 3d sketching technology removes the need for a 2d program and the extra skills needed to learn to draw on such a program.

Monster Machines: This Battlefield Heads-Up Display Turns Troops Into Cyborg Soldiers

Monster Machines: This Battlefield Heads-Up Display Turns Troops Into Cyborg Soldiers | Augmented Virtual Reality | Scoop.it
From self-aiming sniper rifles to bionic power suits, US troops are rapidly gaining access to tools and technology that were the realm of science fict...
Gabrielle Hewitt's insight:

This short article talks about the idea of VR/AR use on the battlefield. The trial of a Heads-Up Display (HUD) helmet, provides soldiers with real-time situational awareness as the system displays waypoints, monitors the positions friendlies and targets alike, provides details on incoming air support, and links in to sensor feeds from drones and remote vehicles as well as communication between friendlies and relaying information to the base.

The idea of such technology in use with the military opens the future possibilities of this technology up.  I personally think it wouldn't be long until VR combines with robotic technology and humanity will be fighting wars with soldiers commanding robots, (similar to the movie 'Avatar'), who knows if the technology has been already made and is  in trial?

nani's curator insight, November 24, 2015 11:56 AM

Augmented Reality could pave the way for a totally new and fresh ways of companies to advertise their products. As shown in this link, Pepsi uses Augmented Reality to really connect to consumers and create a interaction with the viewers that normal conventional advertising could never achieve. Not only did the attention of viewers was received, using social media this advertisement would be spread, further spreading the word of Pepsi.
