360° Production Guide

360° Production Guide | Augmented, Alternate and Virtual Realities in Higher Education | Scoop.it
Virtual reality is impacting fields from medicine to journalism – and education, too. Through simulations and virtual field trips, virtual reality lets us step into the shoes of a young girl in a refugee camp, investigate ocean acidification, witness the wonder of the Great Barrier Reef, and more.

We can do more than consume content with these new technologies: we can also be creators, and produce immersive media that makes an impact.

Educause Explores Future of Extended Reality on Campus

An Educause project is examining the integration of 3D technologies — 3D scanning and printing, virtual reality and augmented reality — into education to create "extended reality." The "Campus of the Future" initiative, sponsored by HP but fully run by Educause, defines the concept of "extended reality" as a spectrum that stretches from the real world at one end to an immersive simulation at the other end.

New API to Bring Augmented Reality to the Web - Mozilla Hacks - the Web developer blog

New API to Bring Augmented Reality to the Web - Mozilla Hacks - the Web developer blog | Augmented, Alternate and Virtual Realities in Higher Education | Scoop.it
We’re entering a new phase of work on JavaScript APIs here at Mozilla, that will help everyone create and share virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) projects on the open web.

As you might know, we formally launched this work last year with the release of Firefox desktop support for the WebVR 1.1 API. Using that draft API, early adopters like WITHIN were able to distribute 3D experiences on the web and have them work well on a range of devices, from mobile phones and cardboard viewers to full-fledged, immersive VR headsets.

Using VR to Help Students Understand Cultural Differences

In an era ripe with mistrust and fear, it's easy to set empathy aside. But what if we could step into the eyeballs of another person to get his or her point of view from the inside? Could that lead to greater understanding? That's the idea for a project at North Carolina State University that uses virtual reality to help engineering students understand different cultural perspectives.
