The Teslasuit could turn Black Mirror’s terrifying ‘Playtest’ into a reality

The Teslasuit could turn Black Mirror’s terrifying ‘Playtest’ into a reality | Augmented, Alternate and Virtual Realities in Education | Scoop.it

Using electro-tactile haptic feedback, the Teslasuit can mimic sensations like bumping into a wall, touching an object, or the impact of a punch in AR/VR settings. We witnessed these sensations first-hand at CES 2019. From the prickly patter of raindrops to growing waves of static, we experienced how the Teslasuit can bring virtual worlds to lifu.

That’s not all the suit can do. Motion capture, climate control, and biometrics are on its list of capabilities. Features like that make Black Mirror’s Playtest episode a real-life possibility.

Virtual Reality Helps Students Understand The Reality Of Ocean Acidification

Virtual Reality Helps Students Understand The Reality Of Ocean Acidification | Augmented, Alternate and Virtual Realities in Education | Scoop.it
Virtual reality can be so much more than another device that lets young males carve each other up in interesting new ways in combat-themed video games. Researchers at Stanford and the University of Oregon have created a VR presentation they call the Stanford Ocean Acidification Experience and presented it to nearly 300 high school and college students. Participants see themselves as part of a living coral reef and watch as it deteriorates to become a lifeless ecosystem infested with weeds.

Bell Says Latest Helicopter was Designed 10 Times Faster With VR

Bell Says Latest Helicopter was Designed 10 Times Faster With VR | Augmented, Alternate and Virtual Realities in Education | Scoop.it

Bell Helicopter challenged its Innovation Team to accelerate its aircraft design process. Turning to VR as a key improvement to their design pipeline, the team created the FCX-001, the company’s first “concept aircraft,” in just six months.

Typically it takes five to seven years to design a helicopter, according to a case study published by Bell and HTC. Within that period there’s typically multiple iterations being explored between draft drawings, pilot testing, and focus groups. Thanks to VR, the FCX-001 ended up taking less than six-months to create, Bell says.

Take Your Students on Virtual Field Trips with This Google Tour Builder

Take Your Students on Virtual Field Trips with This Google Tour Builder | Augmented, Alternate and Virtual Realities in Education | Scoop.it

About Tour Builder

What is Tour Builder?

Tour Builder is a new way to show people the places you've visited and the experiences you had along the way using Google Earth. It lets you pick the locations right on the map, add in photos, text, and video, and then share your creation.

What inspired the creation of Tour Builder?

We originally created Tour Builder to give veterans a way to record all the places that military service has taken them, and preserve their stories and memories as a legacy for their families. But we also thought it could be a useful tool for anyone with a story to tell, so we made it available to everyone.

What are your long-term plans for Tour Builder?

For now, Tour Builder is in beta and we're excited to see what people build and do with it. We'd love to hear your feedback and ideas about how it could be a better storytelling tool. Take it for a spin and tell us what you think here.

XR-Based Learning: How Institutions Engage Through Immersive Experiences | EDUCAUSE | Augmented, Alternate and Virtual Realities in Education | Scoop.it
Immersive, multisensory experiences can draw students and faculty into other realms, beyond the limitations of the physical world. Not unlike today's popular escape rooms, in these scenarios, learners may have to solve complex puzzles or improvise with found elements—sometimes while communicating with others who are also engaged in the virtual environment.

Launched in early 2017, HP's Campus of the Future project engaged with EDUCAUSE in an exploration of extended reality (XR) technologies in higher education. Specifically, the project included augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), and 3D printing and scanning. While it's not the first effort to explore the integration of these technologies into educational experiences, it is perhaps one of the broadest to date, spanning 11 institutions and learning environments across the United States.

Kim Flintoff's insight:
