HTC Vive launches program to bring the arts into virtual reality - SiliconANGLE

HTC Vive launches program to bring the arts into virtual reality - SiliconANGLE | Augmented, Alternate and Virtual Realities in Higher Education | Scoop.it
The Vive Arts program will help cultural institutions, such as museums, documentary projects, educators and other content developers, fund and develop VR installations designed to be highly immersive and available from the comfort of the living room.

In an effort to build out VR content within the industry, HTC has been supporting and investing in the arts and culture space since the launch of the Vive headset. That vision has led HTC to forge partnerships with London’s Royal Academy of Arts, Taipei’s National Palace Museum, the Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle (French National Museum of Natural History) in Paris, Washington D.C.’s Newseum and St. Petersburg’s Hermitage Museum.

AMC is bringing immersive VR to theaters starting next year

AMC is bringing immersive VR to theaters starting next year | Augmented, Alternate and Virtual Realities in Higher Education | Scoop.it
The notion that virtual reality is going to be the next great storytelling medium has run into some bumps along the way. There’s still no real sense of what a great VR experience should actually be, and even less of an idea of how it can be turned into a viable business. Today, AMC Entertainment is announcing a partnership that will bring VR to its movie theaters starting in 2018, and its partner may be a key player in shaping what audiences will come to expect from virtual reality in the years to come.

Want to Really Teach a Robot? Command It With VR

Want to Really Teach a Robot? Command It With VR | Augmented, Alternate and Virtual Realities in Higher Education | Scoop.it
DO ME A favor and grab and object near you. Anything will do. Even if it’s something you’ve never handled before, odds are your brain automatically worked out how you should grasp the thing and with what force. It’s the kind of clever dexterity that makes you human. (You are human, I hope?)

Ask a robot to do the same and you’ll either get a blank stare or a crumpled object in the cold, cold grasp of a machine. Because robots are good at repetitive tasks that require a lot of strength, but they’re still bad at learning how to manipulate novel objects. Which is why today a company called Embodied Intelligence has emerged from stealth mode to fuse the strengths of robots and people into a new system that could make it far easier for regular folk to teach robots new tasks. Think of it like a VR videogame—only you get to control a hulking robot.
