A professor once liked to repeat for us a favorite question he asked his counseling clients. "Do you want to FEEL better, or do you want to GET better?" 

 

Which, is usually a very good question for people seeking counseling. However, for societies seeking ways to reduce risk of re-offending we might ask an equally challenging question. "Would you like prisoners to feel better if, by doing so, they would also get better?"

Anxiety is indecision.

Anxiety happens when we will not give up something we want to keep to get something else that we want to have.

 

To make more of anxiety than this is to diminish anxiety's value in our lives to make choices that are rarely easy or big bargains. Our choices are usually between things that have both benefits and costs.

 

There is always a cost to choose. There is also a cost to delay a choice, which is when anxiety happens. It can feel debilitating, but anxiety is meant to motivate us to choose. If we regard discomfort of anxiety as a disease, we turn our attention away from our choices and toward "treating" a symptom.

 

Taking Xanax for anxiety is like buying vacation with a second mortgage.
