Rosa Rubicondior: Lesson From Goa - Temple to Shriva.

Rosa Rubicondior: Lesson From Goa - Temple to Shriva. | Atheism and Science | Scoop.it
A visit to a Hindu temple reveals a close but healthy interest in sex and sexual pleasure as an essential part of a way of life.
Rosa Rubicondior's insight:
There appears to be a complete absence of the fear of an afterlife and a hideous torture and torment that awaits the dissident. Shiva is there to help, not to punish and is accessible to all, requiring no intermediaries. All that is required is due respect and to follow the basic tenets of personal conduct: honesty, refraining from injuring living creatures, patience, forbearance, self-restraint, and compassion. And of course, Shiva expects his followers to be having an enjoyable sex life.

Rosa Rubicondior: Lessons From Goa - Saint Francis Xavier

Rosa Rubicondior: Lessons From Goa - Saint Francis Xavier | Atheism and Science | Scoop.it
A visit to the tomb of St Francis Xavier shows the difference between legend and reality and how superstitions are believed despite the evidence.
Rosa Rubicondior's insight:
While on a recent vacation in Goa, India we were treated to a guided tour of some of the historic places, including the UNESCO World heritage church of Bom Jésus (Good Jesus in Portuguese - is there a bad one?).

This church is notable mostly because it contains the remains of St Francis Xavier, co-founder of the Jesuits with St Ignatius Loyola.

Rosa Rubicondior: A Big Welcome To New Atheists

Rosa Rubicondior: A Big Welcome To New Atheists | Atheism and Science | Scoop.it
Atheism
Rosa Rubicondior's insight:
So you've finally admitted to yourself that you're an Atheist!

The first thing to understand is that you're not alone; you are part of a very rapidly growing world-wide 'community' of Atheists. I use the term 'community' loosely here because Atheism is not an organised movement. It doesn't commit you to believing in anything in place of gods so there are no dogmas, axioms or tenets of faith (how could there be?). Atheism is not an alternative faith. Atheism is an alternative to faith.

Rosa Rubicondior: No Transitional Neanderthal Forms!

Rosa Rubicondior: No Transitional Neanderthal Forms! | Atheism and Science | Scoop.it
The replacement of Neanderthals by modern humans in Eurasia shows why there are no transitional forms - there never was a transition.
Rosa Rubicondior's insight:
There is a very good reason why there are no transitional forms between some earlier species and later ones - the later ones did not evolve from the earlier one as a superficial reading of the geological column might suggest.

Rosa Rubicondior: Good News From the Catholics

Rosa Rubicondior: Good News From the Catholics | Atheism and Science | Scoop.it
A survey by a Catholic research group shows the catastrophe religion is facing in Europe and how science and reason are winning over primitive superstitions.
Rosa Rubicondior's insight:
'None' has now become the default response for more than 50% of the young population of 12 of the 22 European countries surveyed with a further 3 nudging the 50% mark. In these countries, 'Nones' now outnumber all other demographic groups combines so none of these countries can now be accurately described as a Christian country, a Catholic country, a Protestant country, etc, in so far as the younger generation is concerned.

Rosa Rubicondior: Chimpanzee Gestures Confound Creationists

Rosa Rubicondior: Chimpanzee Gestures Confound Creationists | Atheism and Science | Scoop.it
The fact that two different species use the same non-verbal communication gestures shows they share a common ancestor.
Rosa Rubicondior's insight:
The thing about evolutionary biology is that researchers can't help providing evidence for it. It's not intentional; it's not as though there is any doubt, it's just that the reality is that species evolved from common ancestors. So, inevitably, reality shows the evidence.

Rosa Rubicondior: An Intermediate Spider-Scorpion!

Rosa Rubicondior: An Intermediate Spider-Scorpion! | Atheism and Science | Scoop.it
Beautifully preserved fossils in amber show spider ancestors once had tails and scorpion ancestors once span silk. In other words, they had a common intermediate ancestor.
Rosa Rubicondior's insight:
Here then we have a clear pointer to a past when the common ancestor of spiders, scorpions and these Uraraneida had intermediate characteristics between the two present day groups, spiders and scorpions and a very clear evolutionary explanation for these beautiful fossils as well as the modern groups. How's that for a cult which argues that these intermediates never existed, that evolution of new families can't occur and that the science of evolution is a theory in crisis?

Yes, it's been another dreadful week for creationism. All it needs now is creationists to have enough understanding of the subject to realise it.

Mites Evolving All Around Us

Mites Evolving All Around Us | Atheism and Science | Scoop.it
The house dust mite has evolved a unique system for dealing with a common problem - and ridicules ID as a notion in the process.
Rosa Rubicondior's insight:
It anyone can discern any semblance of intelligence in this, please tell me where it is. Whatever it was that led to this situation, the word 'intelligent' seems singularly inapt. Seeing this as intelligent probably says all that need be said about the person calling it intelligent. but then, these are people who can't understand a simple process like evolution so think it must be magic.

Evolutionary Transition To Modern Humans

Evolutionary Transition To Modern Humans | Atheism and Science | Scoop.it
An examination of archaic Homo sapiens fossil skulls has revealed an evolutionary change in brain shape structure.
Rosa Rubicondior's insight:
The fossil record shows a distinct gradual transition to the modern human brain and cranial capacity from more ape-like origins, even within the species we recognise as Homo sapiens.

Modern Humans May Have Left Africa 200,000 Years Ago

Modern Humans May Have Left Africa 200,000 Years Ago | Atheism and Science | Scoop.it
A fossilised human jawbone from Israel may be 200,000 years old, suggesting our species may be older than we thought.
Rosa Rubicondior's insight:
The story of when and where modern humans first left Africa is continuing to develop and looks like becoming more complicated than first thought when the evidence seemed to point to a single migration by a small group around 50,000 years ago.

Neanderthals Had Sex With Anyone

Neanderthals Had Sex With Anyone | Atheism and Science | Scoop.it
A new study shows that Neanderthals probably had sex with other hominins, not just modern humans and are probably a mosaic of different species and subspecies.
Rosa Rubicondior's insight:
The emerging picture of human evolution is making the superstitious notions of an original couple changing the relationship with a creator god in a way which we can all be held responsible for, and the idea that modern humans were a special creation, ever more untenable.

Two More Catholic Clerics - Two More Sex Abuse Scandals

Two More Catholic Clerics - Two More Sex Abuse Scandals | Atheism and Science | Scoop.it
Sexual abuse allegation against senior Catholic clerics are still emerging and still being 'administered'.
Rosa Rubicondior's insight:
The US Pacific territory of Guam, which is almost wholly Catholic, has been rocked by a series of allegations that vehemently homophobic Anthony Apuron, Archbishop of Agana, sexually abuses altar boys in the 1970s. He has vigorously denied all the allegations and has not been criminally charged, but now another accuser has come forward.

Massive Evolutionary Reduction in Genome Size

Massive Evolutionary Reduction in Genome Size | Atheism and Science | Scoop.it
The Hodgkinia endosymbiotoc bacteria on which cicadas depend had evolved by a vast reduction in its genome and in some species by splitting its genome into dozens of independently evolving fragments.
Rosa Rubicondior's insight:
Hopefully getting back to blogging again after spending time on another book, it's a pleasure coming back with details of two papers published by the same team a few days ago that shatter so many creationist dogmas, it's hard to keep count.

Rosa Rubicondior: Another Piece of the Jigsaw Puzzle

Rosa Rubicondior: Another Piece of the Jigsaw Puzzle | Atheism and Science | Scoop.it
Researchers have shown how the bird beak evolved out of a dinosaur jaw. And yet another 'non-existent' transitional species has been revealed.
Rosa Rubicondior's insight:
This is just another piece of the picture of the evolution of birds from dinosaurs, or as some people would contend, the continuation of theropod dinosaurs over time as they evolved to become what we now classify as birds. It adds to the genetic and morphological evidence that birds are really modern, feathered, bipedal dinosaurs. No doubt creationists will continue to deny this growing evidence and this example of yet another transitional species.

Rosa Rubicondior: Covering Up Down Under | Atheism and Science | Scoop.it
Australian Catholic clerics are threatening to break the law if they are required to report child-abusing priests - but their victims are encouraged to confess their own 'guilt'!
Rosa Rubicondior's insight:
This little news item from last August that slipped beneath my radar at the time, highlights the Catholic Church's commitment to defending and protecting children, or more accurately, the complete lack of any such commitment in-so-far as the victims of it's child-abusing clerics are concerned.

Rosa Rubicondior: The Christian Cult of Child Abuse | Atheism and Science | Scoop.it
The European Court of Human Rights has ruled that German authorities were right to take abused children of a fundamentalist Christian cult into care, to protect them from systematic abuse.

The European Court of Human Rights has ruled that members of a Christian sect do not have the right to abuse children and that the German child-protection agency that intervened and took the abused children into care was right to do so.

Rosa Rubicondior: Triple Alliance

Rosa Rubicondior: Triple Alliance | Atheism and Science | Scoop.it
The three-toed sloth makes a mockery of creationism.
Rosa Rubicondior's insight:
So there we have a superb example of a mutually beneficial triple alliance produced by self-gene evolution. The alliance involves apparently risky behaviour balanced by ultimate benefit to all the species involved. The genes of three species have formed a mutually beneficial alliance by being selfish.

Rosa Rubicondior: Yet Another Newly Evolved Species | Atheism and Science | Scoop.it
A new highly successful species of crayfish has arisen by mutation, giving the lie to creationist claims once again.
Rosa Rubicondior's insight:
Like most weeks, it's been a pretty dreadful one for creationists so far as scientific research is concerned. Another week and still not one iota of support for creationism or its lab-coated mock-science version, intelligent (sic) design. Instead we have the usual plethora of papers which quite incidentally, and with no effort or intent on the part of the authors, refutes creationism and confirms evolution.

Bacteria Evolved to Eat Plastic | Atheism and Science | Scoop.it
A bacteria has evolved the ability to digest a common plastic, exposing yet another creationist lie.
Rosa Rubicondior's insight:
One of the more subtle aspects of evolution, and one that creationists are either unable or unwilling to understand, is the difference between genetic information and the meaning of that information. A paper published in March 2016 by a Japanese team, illustrates that principle very well.

New Poll - Creationism Declining in USA | Atheism and Science | Scoop.it
A new Gallop poll shows acceptance of evolution increasing in the USA but there is still a long way to go to raise the USA above third world levels of superstition and belief in magic.
Rosa Rubicondior's insight:
Slightly encouraging news a couple of days ago from a Gallop poll in the USA. I say slightly encouraging because the change is small on a small data set (just 1011 adults aged 18 or over) and the same poll is also disappointing in other ways.

How Creationists Lie To Us - Creation Ministries

How Creationists Lie To Us - Creation Ministries | Atheism and Science | Scoop.it
Blatant lies and misrepresentation of science reveal the depths to which creationists will stoop to fool their victims.
Rosa Rubicondior's insight:
The lie originated in one of the usual creationist disinformation sites, Creation.com, the online front for Creation Ministries, the Australia-based creationist organisation with which Ken Ham was formerly associated before he realised America was a more lucrative place for scamming fundamentalist Christians, in an article penned by Jonathan O'Brien, a Creation Ministries staffer.

Changing Our Mind When the Evidence Changes

Changing Our Mind When the Evidence Changes | Atheism and Science | Scoop.it
We once thought bears survived the Ice Age in Spain and expanded from there afterwards. Now we know they didn't, thanks to DNA studies.
Rosa Rubicondior's insight:
To a creationist, with their simplistic black vs white, right vs wrong mentality, the fact that science can make mistakes or that the understanding is provisional - and all scientific understanding is provisional, even the best-supported - tells them that science, unlike their firmly held and unchangeable dogmas, is unreliable and therefore wrong.
