TCU Composition's insight:

Rhetorical Analysis Paper Presentation by Jay Jay Stroup:

Hi, all! In my mid-semester reflection my students let me know they still have no idea how to write a RAP. And since they have one due Tuesday, I made this RAP/Rhetorical Situation Google Presentation. The use of the 2 commercials is based on Kassia Jackson Waggoner's presentation to the new GIs this summer. Feel free to use or adapt. Right now, it's set to view only, but you can probably copy and paste everything.

I also realized by their comments that they see absolutely no connection between the 4 RAPs they write on This I Believe, Discovery, Profile, and Argument, so I tried to make these connections explicit toward the end of the presentation.

I think it really, really helped my students. They actually asked me questions and made references to their previous RAPs and the struggle they had with content versus rhetorical analysis.

I also told them a good content to rhetorical analysis ratio is about 10%/90%, which seemed to relieve them and reminded them that the content should always be in the service of their analysis rather than overwhelming it.

TCU Composition's insight:

From Kassia Jackson Waggoner (via fb):

It made me think that creating an adaptation like this might be a good class project for the future. It seems like a huge undertaking, but it also looks like a lot of fun!
