Madison Square Garden Intern Lawsuit Could Create Disastrous Precedent For Sports Industry

Madison Square Garden Intern Lawsuit Could Create Disastrous Precedent For Sports Industry | assignments | Scoop.it

Taylor Kuegel's curator insight, September 26, 2013 10:23 AM

1) I learned that there are over 500 + people sueing Madison Square Garden because they were "Wrongfully classfied to avoid being paid." These people claimed that they were hired under the title of "intern" or "student associate" so they were able to do work as though they were actual employees. These interns were asked to work as much as 5 days a week working on time lengthy things such as ticket sales and administrative projects. This suit goes as far back as unpaid wages since 2007.

2) I found interesting that many sports and entertainment companies rely on interns to help around their company or organization for free. Also that the companies find that the learning experience and new skills the interns gain out of the internship are far more valuable than any financial reward. One other thing I found interesting was that many scucessful companies in the sport business were started with the aide of interns that were willing to volunteer.

3) I chose this article because I wanted to read about the interns and internships. Right now at Endicott we are focusing on trying to find an internship for this year during the winter break and it is important to learn about them and realize what they entail and that the companies actually do rely on their interns.

 4) This information will help me in the sports management industry in the manner that when I am looking for a job having an internship before is very helpful and realizing that all interns do not get paid. Also It will help me from the other side of the spectrum that if my business that I worked for had an intern realizng that they are needed and important but to make sure they are aware of their position and the benefits they will and will not recieve.
