Steroids: Just the Facts

Steve Sieber's comment, March 17, 2013 10:35 PM
Androgen steroids are man-made products that were made to resemble male testosterone, and are taken to enhance performance and appearance, and to build muscle. The drug's "anabolic" (muscle-building) effects are utilized in retaining proteins that build stronger muscles, bones, and skin
Steve Sieber's comment, March 17, 2013 10:42 PM
Those who abuse steroids usually rely on word of mouth to determine the dosage in which they should use (that may not be safe). Some megadosers use up to 100 mgs per day, where a doctor would only recommend 1 to 5 mgs to a patient who actually needs the anabolic steroid. They use the steroids in 12 week cycles so that their bodies do not build up a tolerance to the drug, followed by a period in which they do not take P.E.D.'s
Steve Sieber's comment, March 17, 2013 10:49 PM
Androgenic steroids can be used for some medical purposes including breast cancers, anemia, osteoporosis, and swelling disorders, among others. Anabolic steroids are not "allowed" to be used for cosmetic or appearance purposes and have strict penalties against those "traffickers".

For some athletes, success, as well as a monetary value may encourage one to take performace enhancing drugs to ugrade their performance level so that they can defeat their competition. Kids and young adults are vulnerable targets for P.E.D.s because they are looking for a self-identity, emancipating ones self from their family, and it sometimes gives the user a false sese of pride and what's real

1.What inspired you to choose your career?

Being involved in sports most of my life I have always been into fitness--nutrition came later when I was in college. I took a nutrition class my freshman year in college and fell in love with it. It amazed me how much the body/organs can be affected good or bad by what we eat.

2. In your words, give me a definition of exercising.

My definiton of exercise is the body in motion. Any type of moving or exertion a person may do to burn calories or get in shape.

3. What diet plan should one follow if they wish to lose weight?

There are so many diet plans out there. In fact, one of the biggest money makers on the market. Most people will spend lots of money on something they think will be a quick fix for them. Weight does not come on overnight--therefore we cannot lose it overnight.I have found the best diet plan out there is weight watchers because it does not eliminate any one food or food group from a person's diet. It teaches portion control and incorporating activity into your daily routine. They also offer weekly meetings for support with other people that are trying to lose weight.

4.How do diets vary amongst individual (children, teenagers, adults, atheltes, the 9-5 worker)?

In so many ways diets vary amongst individuals--first of all we all have our food preferences and we all like or dislike different foods. Diets can also vary for health reasons like food allergies, diabetes, high blood pressure, celiac disease, heart disease, renal failure(just to name a few)Growing children, teenagers and athletes all probably need more calories than your average adult working 9 to 5. Even your career could depend on what you eat..for instance a person who is sedentary all day working at their computer would need less calories per day then a construction worker who is doing heaving lifting and exertion. All of these individuals should incorporate at least 5 serivings of fruits and vegetables and try to choose leaner meats more often than fatty meats.

5.How can a healthy diet combined with physical activity improve one's lifestyle?

A healthy diet combined with exercise has proven to be so beneifical for one's health. In adult women it has been proven that weight bearing activity has decreased the instances of ostepororis. Also those people that have been diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes that are overweight and not eating properly can completely reverse and cure this disease by losing weight/exercise/ and following a healthy diet. Those with high blood pressure can decrease their medications or completely go off of their medicine by following a healthy diet and incorporating exercise(same holds true for those on cholesterol medications)Most diseases are caused by not eating healthy and lack of activity--this in turns can lead to obesity(which can be the catalyst for many problems)

6.HOw can eating a healthy diet be beneficial to all peoples?

It may not keep you from getting diseases, but it could definitely delay the onset of a disease or the need for medicationsAgain, just eating a healthy diet and incorporating exercise can make daily activities easier for you to accomplish because you will have more energy because you do not have to carry all the extra weight around.Average weight people tend to get a better night sleep--overweight people could develop sleep apnea or snore more which interupts one's sleep.

7.What is the Overload Principle (Why is it that people push their bodies to the extreme while trying to lose weight and cut the amount of calories taken in)? How can this harm one's body?

The overload principle is completely based on the way one physcially trains or pushs themselves in exercise. If applied correctly it is a brilliant way to train. The human body is involved in a constant process of adapting to stresses or lack of stresses placed upon it. When you stress the body in a manner it’s unaccustomed to (overload), the body will react by causing physiological changes (adaptation) to be able to handle that stress in a better way the next time it occurs.
The overload priciple forces the body to adapt to the stresses that are being placed on the targeted muscle--therefore improving your performance and seeing results faster.

By the way my proper title is registered and licensed dietitian- if you want someone with credentials that is the name you have to look forIf you see nutritionist--anyone can call themself that--you could say I am steve sieber a nutritionist-- so it is important to look for that when looking for correct nutritional information.

Some teens and young athletes may be at risk for P.E.D.'s because of the influence that they see around them, for example, magazines, television, internet, and other resources. Teens need to be made aware of the side effects that such drugs can cause to their bodies before they take them. All that the users know is that the drug can be useful in promoting endurance/strength

Some of thse who abuse steroids abuse multiple drugs at a time, a phenomenon known as "stacking".
Steve Sieber's comment, March 18, 2013 10:51 PM
There is sometimes a misconception between anabolic steroids and corticosteroids. They both produce hormones that are already actively being produced in the body, but have different tasks. One is used to build muscles while the other may be used toreduce inflammation.

Anabolic steroids are produced in pharmaceutical companies and can only be purchased legally by those with a prescription. Those who abuse steroids do so illegally and are usually obtained through smuggled efforts or in secret laboratories. Posession of steroids s not illegal, but trafficking of such drugs is.

1. How can eating a healthy diet and physical activity improve one's lifestyle?

Eating healthy gives a person more energy and happier moods. When a person feels this way they be more willing to participate in physical activity boosting their energy levels, positive moods and overall well-being.

2. How can being physically active be beneficial to a person?

Being physically active will add years to your life by helping all the body systems function more effectively.
Reduces stress levels and releases dopamine which is a hormone that promotes feelings of pleasure thereby increasing happier moods. More blood flows to the brain which means more oxygen to the brain which helps a person think more clearly. Activity helps the heart and other muscles become stronger making everyday tasks easier.
Physical activity tones up the body - you look and feel better which increases your self-esteem. You generally get out of the house more and increase your social health as well.

3. What are some forms of physical activities that one can partake in, and what is the best one that you can recommend to get people moving and make them more physically active?

People should participate in activities that they find enjoyable, swimming, walking, biking, weight lifting ( there is not just one specific activity that is best.) if they don’t enjoy it they will find a million excuses to not do it. If they find it enjoyable they are more likely to continue. One key influence is to add music to whatever they are doing. Music helps people work harder for a longer period of time. Music pumps people up!

4. Who is a positive role model that one can look up to for inspiration when they are beginning a new physical activity or dietary plan?

Hopefully family and friends take on a supportive role but it is really the person themselves that must WANT to make a change in their life.
They can look at people like Jillian Michaels and Jarod from Subway as people who were overweight and were able to loose it get fit and keep it off. But again.... they themselves must want to be physically fit and be willing to change old unhealthy habits into new healthy habits. Hopefully family and friends support their changes and not sabotage their new healthy lifestyle by talking them into eating ice cream or skip their exercises “just this one time”.
