A major concern for many people purchasing an electric vehicle is the price of batteries and their lifespan. Although no one is exactly sure yet what the lifespan will be, Tesla believes for their roadster the battery will last for 5 years or 100,000 miles. That's alright until you hear the projected cost of the new battery is $10,000. Although this is higher than most estimates for replacement batteries a main reason is this car costs approximately $100,000.

One other issue with replacing batteries is that the batteries are expected to be unaccessible to the average person. This costs the owner more money by taking it to a dealer where you must pay for the battery and labor.

HowStuffWorks "Can Electric Car Batteries Be Recycled?"

HowStuffWorks "Can Electric Car Batteries Be Recycled?" | Aspect 2 Electric Vehicles | Scoop.it
Happily, the answer is yes -- the batteries that power electric cars (and hybrids, for that matter) can be recycled. Learn more about recycling electric car batteries.

For the eco friendly a major concern is the disposal or recycling of these batteries. For as long as electric vehicles have been invented we have been able to recycle them. On lead-acid batteries (old style) 96 % of the battery is recycled (even the lead), to put that in perspective only 38% of a glass bottle is saved when it's recycled.

In order to keep up with innovations in the new lithium-ion batteries Toxco is opening a new recycling division for them. Electric car companies including Tesla has already sent Toxco lithium-ion batteries to be recycled. Lithium- ion batteries can be recycled in a couple ways. They can be torn into a bunch of pieces in order to seperate metals, This is used when they don't have any charge. If they can still hold a charge they are frozen in liquid nitrogen and obliterated into a bunch of pieces.

Ford's all electric vehicle's are exactly what they sound like. The only fuel they run on is an electric battery, charged by your house with a plug, This form of vehicle has it's limitations though, they can only run about a 100 miles. Unlike hybrids (see next comment) there is no back up power.
Jordan Lock's comment, March 13, 2013 7:24 PM
Ford has two models of hybrids, Plug in and regular. Plug in hybrids are the same idea as the EREV vehicles under the via motors link. However unlike via motors Ford has a hybrid electric vehicle which runs solely on a generator that runs you're engine. This is often slightly less efficient because it never runs off stored power. Energy is also captured from the breaking system in order to run the batteries.

As for more common hybrids (EV) experts say it will cost approximately $1000 -$6000. However for the benefit of sales and competition vehicle producers are looking to lower the cost of these batteries in order to make them more appealing.

Some people are worried about "urban mining" which is where everyday items are scrapped for their precious metals. “There is no green car without green recycling,” said Ghislain Van Damme, a major issue with electric cars is that they can actually be worse for the environment if they aren't used correctly.

Via motors is a producer of "EREV" vehicles commonly known as hybrids. This utilizes a small gas engine that powers a generator. That generator runs the batteries that the electric vehicle runs off once the initial charge is depleted. Via motors specializes in trucks and large SUV's which is unheard of territory in the electric vehicle field.
Jordan Lock's comment, March 13, 2013 7:35 PM
Via motors is the first company that I have found that produces a 4 wheel drive electric vehicle. They also have useful applications built in such the generator can be used to run things that can plug into the truck. the claim you can run 400 miles on one tank of fuel also, which comes out to be around a 100 mpg. The via trucks also have more torque and better overall performance than the standard gas truck.
