29.01>12.02.2017 // Chroniques - Acte 3 / Imaginaires Numériques // Seconde Nature-Zinc-Future DiverCities | Digital #MediaArt(s) Numérique(s) | Scoop.it

Drone Paintings by KATSU - Silicon Valley Contemporary Art Fair

Drone Paintings by KATSU - Silicon Valley Contemporary Art Fair | Digital #MediaArt(s) Numérique(s) | Scoop.it

The Hole is proud to present a solo booth at the first Silicon Valley Art Fair by multi media artist KATSU. In a fair focusing on art and technology, we will present a series of abstract paintings by KATSU that are made by drone aircraft (flight). The booth will also feature a video that documents how the paintings were made and the technology used to make them.

The artworks in this exhibition are a completely new type of painting that has never been made before. As drone aircraft (drones) have become more affordable to consumers, KATSU has been working to develop a way to make them paint. Originally developing technology so drones could be programmed to write illegal graffiti, KATSU created the hardware and software to have a drone carry a spray paint can and a mechanism to press the can to emit spray. These pasts months he has experimented with the weight of the paint, the straw for the sprayer, the sensor for the can activation, the flight of the drone and different paint and surfaces to achieve the artworks he sought.

Audio Graffiti no. 2 - interactive soundart installation by Zack Settel & Mike Wozniewski

Audio Graffiti is a multi-user sound/music installation that explores new modes of sonic interaction, afforded by the latest in locative technologies. Several mobile users may create and explore a gradually evolving collage of audio graffiti.

The piece can be deployed in an outdoor environment (using GPS tracking), or in an indoor space as seen in this video. Equipped with a wireless headset and tracking device, participants can "tag" or "spray" sound on to a real physical wall. We provide several small musical instruments, which can be used along with one's voice, to add sounds to the collaborative musical mix. The installation is seeded with some pre-existing sonic material, which allows participants to synchronize rhythmically, and maintains cohesion over time. All user-contributed sounds slowly fade away, resulting in an ever-evolving musical piece.

As users moves about, they also experience a changing sonic perspective of the localized sounds, based on their particular location. Thus, users not only create the audio content, but they also participate actively in the encounter (remixing) of sonic material. Participants who are waiting their turn in the staging area may watch a real-time 3D visualization of the installation, which shows avatars of each player walking amongst virtual sound sources. ...

A+ | installation - Thierry Fournier 2008 > 2012 | Digital #MediaArt(s) Numérique(s) | Scoop.it

#Graffiti Fur: Turning Your Carpet Into a Computer Display :)

This new display technology, Graffiti Fur, utilizes the fact that the shading properties of fur change as the fibers are raised or flattened. Users can erase drawings by sweeping the surface with the hand and flattening the fibers, and then draw lines by moving fingers in the opposite direction and raising the fibers. These material properties can be found in various items such as carpets in our living environments.

The Graffiti Fur demonstration allows users to draw patterns on two different "fur displays" using a roller device and a pen device. The technology converts ordinary objects into rewritable displays without requiring or creating any non-reversible modifications. In addition, it can be used to present large-scale images without glare, and the images it creates require no operating costs.

Urban Echo - urban media installation by LUSTlab

Now that we are familiar with being connected digitally, the physicality of our interactions becomes important again. The globalised communication systems we use everyday exist on a level above our tangible surroundings.

Urban Echo brings some of this communication back to real locations, connecting public places and therefore people, cities and cultures. It extends space beyond our once concrete parameters.

Webcams allow you to see into another space, mirrors allow you to see your own space. Using billboard screens and cameras, Urban Echo creates a hybrid of these two things, allowing not only see into another city but maybe see yourself transported into another city or culture. A mid point between transparency and reflection, introspection and extrospection.

Placed in public areas, the screens have a variety of modes. Sometimes they create a recursive loop allowing interaction between people in multiple cities and sometimes they are just a window to another place, that might intrigue a passer by. They can connect regardless of distance, folding locations together and rearranging our perspective of public space.

Sound Mirrors project • by Lisa Autogena - ongoing since 1998

Sound Mirrors project • by Lisa Autogena - ongoing since 1998 | Digital #MediaArt(s) Numérique(s) | Scoop.it

project inspired by the acoustic mirrors, a military defence system for listening to the sky created between the two world wars. The project is constructing two new sound mirrors – one in England and one in France. The new mirrors will face each other across the English Channel, and will enable the French and the English to speak across the sea. (ongoing since 1998)

Standing silent and abandoned, a series of isolated and mysterious concrete structures line the south east coast of England. Known locally as “listening ears”, these structures are vestiges from great inter-war acoustic experiments that took place in both England and France - early acoustic warning systems against the possibility of an airborne invasion across the English Channel.

The acoustic mirrors tilted their faces to the sky and collected sound in giant concrete dishes. They were operated by trained listeners who endured cold nights at their listening posts, entombed in concrete bunkers, or high on listening platforms in front of the mirrors, to pick up distant noises from the sky. The acoustic mirrors were never used in wartime - the invention of radar and the increasing speed of aeroplanes rendered them obsolete within ten years of their erection.

Almost seventy years later, these now forgotten experiments have become the focus and the inspiration for an an attempt to re-invent this redundant technology for the 21st Century.

«329 prepared dc-motors, cotton balls, toluene tank | Zimoun 2013» Making-of Video by Florian Buerki

Using simple and functional components, Zimoun builds architecturally-minded platforms of sound. Exploring mechanical rhythm and flow in prepared systems, his installations incorporate commonplace industrial objects. In an obsessive display of simple and functional materials, these works articulate a tension between the orderly patterns of Modernism and the chaotic forces of life. Carrying an emotional depth, the acoustic hum of natural phenomena in Zimoun's minimalist constructions effortlessly reverberates.

Recent displays of his work include exhibitions at the Nam June Paik Art Center in Korea; the Kuandu Museum of Fine Arts, Taipei; Art Basel; Galerie Denise René Paris; the Ringling Museum of Art, Florida; bitforms gallery New York; Kunsthalle Bern; Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein; the Contemporary Art Museum MNAC Bucharest; Museum of Contemporary Art MSUM, Ljubljana; Seoul Museum of Art; among others.

ICEBERG, interactive installation by ATOMIC3

Iceberg is a playful immersive work that tells the story of an iceberg, from its calving into Arctic waters to its final melting near a southern shore. In their natural state, the crevasses within an iceberg resonate like gigantic organ pipes whose tonalities change as the iceberg gradually melts. Inspired by this monumental natural musical instrument, Iceberg consists of a series of illuminated metallic arches that each produce a particular sound.

Arranged as a tunnel, the arches beckon visitors to enter, listen to and play this giant organ, whose notes and light travel from end to end of the musical corridor. Human activity “warms up” these ice monuments and transforms their original nature into a visual and auditory symphony. ...
