2017>2019 - Resurrection Lab - Preservation of Born-digital content using Emulation /// iMal | Digital #MediaArt(s) Numérique(s) | Scoop.it

In March 2017, iMAL and Packed.be start a two-year research collaboration to develop methods, tools and services for the preservation of digital-born content, as well as their public access through a prototype of new type of media library for digital artefacts based on emulation.

The project will focus on the use of emulation, an efficient approach that consists in simulating old hardware platform in a software way. This technique provides a promising basis for the development of a strategy for the preservation of digital creations and their future public access. Today, in Belgium and Brussels, expertise in the preservation of digital-born works and the use of emulators is not sufficient to meet the challenges on the future of born-digital content. It is this gap that the Resurrection Lab proposes to fill.

The project initiated by iMAL is a collaboration with Packed.be, the Center of Expertise in Digital Heritage based in Brussels and the bwFLA team of the University of Freiburg, one of the leading R&D center in the development of emulation environment.

The project is supported by Innoviris, the Institute for Research and Innovation of the Brussels-capital Region.

Challenges of #DigitalArt for our Societies - Lecture by Christiane Paul (2015) / #mediaart

Christiane PAUL explores the complexities behind this "state of the art world," outlining the conceptual and practical challenges that digital art presents to institutions and the art market in terms of archiving, contextualization, and preservation. Also discussed will be the frameworks of collections vs. archives that can adapt to the changing requirements of the mutable digital "records" they contain; the suitability of museums vs. other organizations in documenting and archiving different types of digital art; and possible infrastructural changes that could assist in supporting the art form.

Christiane PAUL (Whitney Museum, New School, NY) is one of the most influential curators of media art. Since the 1990s, she developed countless exhibitions. Recently she prepared INDAF Digital Art Festival (Inchon, South Korea, 2009), Eduardo Kac: Biotopes (Rio de Janeiro, 2010), Cory Arcangel: Pro Tools (New York, 2011), The Public Private (Kellen Gallery, The New School, 2013) and Scalable Relations (California, 2009). Paul is professor at the New School, NY and leads the ‘Media Studies Graduate Program’. Digital Art (Thames & Hudson 2003, 2008, 2015) and Context Providers: Conditions of Meaning in Media Arts (Intellect, 2011) are already classics in the field.

Preservation and Access to Born-digital Culture // digicult // #mediaart | Digital #MediaArt(s) Numérique(s) | Scoop.it

In the continuation of their collaborative program on Cultural Heritage in the Digital Age, which started beginning of 2015, iMAL and Packed organise the first international symposium in Brussels on the issues of preservation of born-digital art and culture and their public access.

In the last decade, digital technologies have invaded on a global scale all realms of our daily life, both private and professional. A large part of today’s cultural and artistic creations are produced with digital technologies, using them as their native medium of expression as well as their medium of distribution on which the users’ experience strongly relies.
Born-digital culture is expanding as fast as the progress and availability of digital technologies and infrastructures, and most probably will soon represent the vast majority of all contemporary cultural production...

Digital art, in its countless manifestations, has become a household word in creative production; its cultural relevance is unquestioned. But its conservation does present new challenges to museums and collections alike: After all, we are not talking about static objects that can be “stabilized” in the classical sense; rather, digital art is akin to performance, because new conditions can arise in each process or each performance. What can be done if the technology is already out of date the moment you switch on the computer? How do we deal with works of art that are dependent on proprietary software that’s no longer being updated by its manufacturers, or whose manufacturer no longer exists? How can net-based projects be preserved for the future?

Transformation Digital Art - International symposium on the preservation of born-digital art | LIMA - 18>19.02.2016 | Digital #MediaArt(s) Numérique(s) | Scoop.it

Digital artworks form a separate group in museum collections. Museums and visitors do not have much experience in dealing with these artworks. Management, preservation and presentation of it is largely unknown territory, while museums and artists need knowledge about this vulnerable digital part of modern heritage. How can they keep digital born artworks accessible in the future?
