#Call for curators - A.I.R. Gallery /// deadline 21.04.2017 | Digital #MediaArt(s) Numérique(s) | Scoop.it

A.I.R. Gallery invites curators to submit proposals for our next CURRENTS exhibition that will take place between January 4 and February 4, 2018. CURRENTS began in 2010 as a timely and innovative biennial exhibition program. CURRENTS addresses contemporary issues that warrant expanded critical attention in the art world.

Proposals should describe an original concept for a group exhibition that can be aligned with the mission of A.I.R. Gallery, and refer to its relevance today. Your proposal should not include a selection of artists but should only focus on the concept of the exhibition and its importance for the institution and the audience. The selection of works will be made from a subsequent open call for artists after the curator has been selected.  A.I.R. Gallery will publish a catalog of the exhibit, which will include images of the artwork and a written essay from the selected curator. A stipend will be available.

Illuminating the ‘Dark’ Web and Content Monitoring, Eva and Franco Mattes // by Tes Loos > New York Times | Digital #MediaArt(s) Numérique(s) | Scoop.it

Plenty of artists have explored the relationship between light and shadow to create indelible images and tell a story.

Eva and Franco Mattes — married Brooklyn artists and “hacktivists” — use those ideas metaphorically, peeling back the surface of what they call the “sanitized” internet to reveal its murkier side: the world of content monitoring and the elusive individuals who are tasked with tracking and removing offensive material online.

Their latest exhibition, “Abuse Standards Violations,” on view at London’s Carroll/Fletcher gallery until Aug. 27, is a journey into what Ben Vickers, a London curator at the Serpentine Galleries and fan of their work, called “the dark, morbid heart of the internet.”

XPO curates, produces and exhibits art of the Digital Age.

We live in the midst of the Digital Renaissance. In the last 20 years, the Internet has produced more information than ever before in human history.

The digital has merged with the physical to create a hybrid and augmented reality that is shaping the world.

New aesthetics, new materialities and new questions have appeared.
XPO embraces this fusion by supporting artists and curators who comment our world of digital ubiquity.

XPO believes the Artist is at the very centre of the #newworld, questioning and anticipating the consequences of the new structure in which we now live and, in doing so, bringing us closer to a greater enlightenment.

Data and Dragons - by Addie Wagenknecht // bitforms gallery

Data and Dragons - by Addie Wagenknecht // bitforms gallery | Digital #MediaArt(s) Numérique(s) | Scoop.it

Data and Dragons is a series of sculptures that intercepts and logs anonymous live data captured from surrounding WiFi signals. An assembly of custom printed circuit boards and Ethernet cabling, each work is dark and austere, manifesting “the cloud”, social networks, data, leaks, and that which forms social capital into a single object. Passively interactive, the behavior of these pieces is driven by custom hardware and packet sniffers, which capture all the live data passing through the area. The information is then visualized via surface mounted LEDs, through a series of blinking patterns.

Addie Wagenknecht is an American artist based in Austria whose work explores the tension between expression and technology. Blending conceptually-driven painting, sculpture, and installation with the ethos of hacker culture, Wagenknecht constructs spaces between art object and lived experience. Here, the darker side of systems that constitute lived reality emerge, revealing alternative yet parallel realities. In the context of post-Snowden information culture, Wagenknecht’s work contemplates power, networked consciousness, and the incessant beauty of everyday life despite the anxiety of being surveilled.

Art, Technology and Online Identity - By ROB Sharp - Whitechapel Gallery / NY Times | Digital #MediaArt(s) Numérique(s) | Scoop.it

An exhibition at the Whitechapel Gallery in London explores how the digital age has influenced artists.

LONDON — Smiling energetically, a video projection of a woman appears to be welcoming visitors to the Whitechapel Gallery here. But on approaching the work, “Homo Sacer,” by the British artist and writer James Bridle, she instead issues bureaucratic sound bites. They include text from the letter that stripped the terror suspect Mohamed Sakr of his British citizenship, two years before he was killed by a United States drone strike in Somalia in 2012.

“I was fascinated that someone born in the United Kingdom could have their citizenship removed,” Mr. Bridle said. “This work is essentially a step-by-step guide on how you can go from being a British subject to being placed in the legal position of being able to be killed.”

Electronic Superhighway (2016-1966) - Whitechapel Gallery - 29.01 > 15.05.2016 | Digital #MediaArt(s) Numérique(s) | Scoop.it

A major exhibition bringing together over 100 works to show the impact of computer and Internet technologies on artists from the mid-1960s to the present day.

The exhibition title is taken from a term coined in 1974 by South Korean video art pioneer Nam June Paik, who foresaw the potential of global connections through technology. Arranged in reverse chronological order, Electronic Superhighway begins with works made at the arrival of the new millennium, and ends with Experiments in Art and Technology (E.A.T), an iconic, artistic moment that took place in 1966. Key moments in the history of art and the Internet emerge as the exhibition travels back in time.

The exhibition features new and rarely seen multimedia works, together with film, painting, sculpture, photography and drawing. From Cory Arcangel, Jeremy Bailey, James Bridle, Constant Dullaart and Oliver Laric, to Roy Ascott, Judith Barry, Lynn Hershman Leeson and Ulla Wiggen, over 70 artists spanning 50 years are included.

AUTOMATA
Art made by machines for machines

Here it’s a question of immortality… Interrogating the next steps of human evolution. Not only life in this new society that we can already apprehend, but the notion of art when we reach the singularity point.
Singularity is the moment when machines, in the broadest sense, will be as, or more, intelligent than humans. The development of artificial intelligence foreshadows a certain kind of prolongation of life and also suggests that machines will be the next step of our evolution. Will machines prove capable of shared aesthetics?

Today artists live, work and exhibit on the Internet.  They reach a networked global community, often embedding artworks in the everchanging context of streaming images, open data sources, and instant feedback mechanisms that constitute online public space. Their resulting body of work is sometimes best suited for the browser, but also develops beyond the screen into the physical space of the gallery.
