07.04>21.05.2017 – No Copyright Infringement Intended / Curated by Antonio Roberts @ Phoenix | Digital #MediaArt(s) Numérique(s) | Scoop.it

No Copyright Infringement Intended is a group exhibition exploring the relationship between copyright and culture in the digital age, investigating how the concept of ownership and authorship is evolving and coming into conflict with outdated copyright and intellectual property laws.

Since the 1990s the internet has provided the opportunity for mass copying, redistribution and remixing of content – profoundly changing the way culture is produced and shared and sparking legal battles and debates that still rage on. Today, the increasing availability of technologies like 3D scanning and 3D printing have extended the ability to digitally copy and reproduce to the physical realm.

...

The exhibition includes work by Nick Briz, Emilie Gervais, Nicolas Maigret, Christopher Meerdo, Jan Nikolai Nelles & Nora Al-Badri, Duncan Poulton, Fernando Sosa, Andrea Wallace & Ronan Deazley

Curated by Antonio Roberts, a new media artist and curator based in Birmingham. Kindly supported by Arts Council England

Set in the Chinese owned and controlled Detroit Economic Zone (DEZ) and shot using the same scanning technologies used in autonomous vechicles, we see this near future city through the eyes of the robots that manage it.

Reconstructing Marienbad - installations by Mats Dekock // #mediaart #cinema #architecture

Reconstructing Marienbad consists of 3 separate installations, inspired by the film classic 'L'Année Dernière à Marienbad' (1961) by Alain Resnais. The installation investigates how a cinematic experience can be transformed into an architectural form.

'Disembodied narrative': all the spoken text from the opening sequence of 'L'Année à Marienbad' is deconstructed in horizontal and vertical elements, that are printed on a disk and look like binary code. The disks rotates under stroboscopic light, which melts the abstract elements back together into a readable text.

'Cinematic Decoupage': this installation is a maquette, which consists out of tendozens perfect copies of the same empty hallway of the movie. The maquette transforms this single frame into a animated sculpture by rotation. Because of the persistence of vision this sculpture transforms into a living and organic image.

'Regard-en-Abyme': this installation combines all the interior rooms and spaces filmed in the opening sequence of 'L'Année à Marienbad' together in an ovular maquette. By using a pinhole camera the slowly rotating maquette is transformed into a cinematic experience and the spectator can wander endlessly through the empty corridors and hallways of the movie.

Barthélemy Antoine-Loeff is a french filmmaker and new media artist, based in Paris. He explores, the fragility of the world, using installations and performances. He's staging immersive and poetic audiovisual experiences to make visible what is not, twisting reality to extract other dimensions : some doors open onto universe full of mysteries...

Attracted by the darkness and the light which may arise therein, by the opposing forces, fed by the Italian cinema of the years 60/70 and the kinetic art, he creates precarious and ephemeral balance that can break into a fraction of a second. With his language based on the mechanics of dreams and madness and its cinematographic aesthetics, he's questionning the look and the influence of the humans on their surroundings. In 2016, his work Ljós is nominated to the International Digital Art Prize, Prix Cube.

23.03 - Projection-débat "Dans les limbes" / Cultures #numériques // Millenium Doc #Festival 2016 @ Bozar | Digital #MediaArt(s) Numérique(s) | Scoop.it

What would Voyager 3 contain if it would be re-launched today, after 38 years? In 1977, an information package was launched into space, a symbolical selection for the human civilization, launched with the intention to be intercepted or discovered by an alien civilization. A sort of “hello” from the humans, a way of saying “we are here”.

Today, maybe, such a package would contain microchips, texts with smiley faces at a correct decoding. We would probably brag about the invention of a virtual communication system, about our intelligent control systems? Our self-control or the controlling of others. We might also include some e-books about the human nature, on micro-sd cards, because we also advanced our knowledge in the field of psychoanalysis. Why wouldn’t we send a picture of Osama or of other terrorists that we cannot find, maybe they would help us with that.
Maybe we could simply send a cry for help, in the hope that in the thousand years that would take them to discover it, there would still be a chance for a few of us to be saved. Or Voyager 3 could be a new Noah’s ark, a capsule of DNA for a possible reconstruction.

In the end, the important thing to know is that we are not alone. And also, it is important to understand how did we end up here. But does it worth the effort? Or wouldn’t it be wiser to enjoy our mere existence and to co-exist peacefully without exploiting each other for the sake of profit, without exercising our power and dominance over each other.

Is this exploitation of others human nature? Is it the engine of progress? Is this evolution? Or is it evolution the creation of virtual realities where we can feed our brains with “01”? Till then, we have other serious problems. Soon the Earth will become overcrowded and under the human influence, the fight for territory drives the species to the verge of extinction. For now, we are preparing a colony to Mars…

But meanwhile art must go on, contemplating and acting, re-acting with our creative means, being aware of the power of now. Hope exists as long as we believe in hope, as long as we believe in our creative power in order to save ourselves and hope for a broader echo.

5 Case Studies of Jean-Luc Godard’s Innovative Filmmaking Techniques

5 Case Studies of Jean-Luc Godard’s Innovative Filmmaking Techniques | Digital #MediaArt(s) Numérique(s) | Scoop.it

Few names in cinematic history garner as much excitement and critical praise as Jean-Luc Godard. An innovative maverick and intellectual visionary, Godard was a pioneer of the La Nouvelle Vauge, or “New Wave” of the late 1950’s to late 1960’s. At a time when the Hollywood star machine was at it’s apex, Godard’s films were considered a sort of outlaw cinema, undermining all rules on which the traditional Hollywood narrative was perfected.

CINEMA 2.0 at ifva aspires to push the cinematic form in order to explore its new creative frontiers.

This year’s “CINEMA 2.0: The Phantom Machine” will focus on cinema’s unique role as a practical archival medium and a symbolic time machine. The exhibition will feature four innovative works that use sound, sight, smell and more in bringing about reflections on the intertwining relationships among media technology, history and temporality.

When happenings come at a speed that human memory can no longer grasp and retain, we human beings have developed phonography, photography and cinema to record and represent what once happened. Cinema resembles a time machine that captures and crystalises a certain moment, or even allows the viewer to go back to the past. The four artworks in the exhibition, possessing certain cinematic qualities, resist the passage of time each in its own way like cinema.

Peter Vogel - The Sound of Shadows (documentary by Jean Martin - 2011) // #soundart

Jean Martin’s documentary Peter Vogel: The Sound of Shadows is a lasting document complementing the artist’s first solo exhibition in Britain. It provides viewers with a rich context to understand the artist and his works, whether or not they were able to visit the exhibition itself. The film offered an appropriately dynamic medium to explore and reflect on Vogel’s time-based, interactive objects, yet nobody anywhere in the world had previously made a full-length documentary about Vogel. Due to the artist’s age and health, it was imperative to take the opportunity to complement the exhibition premiere of his sonic interactive sculptures at the University of Brighton in 2011 with a comprehensive DVD.

Two prime research questions emerged: how best to demonstrate the ways in which time-based, interactive sound objects work; and what made Peter Vogel’s work pioneering and different?

Over the two-year evolution of this project, Martin’s method included filming Vogel in his Freiburg studio and elsewhere (including his solo exhibition in Paris, 2009) as he talked about what motivated him to create his interactive, dynamic works, given that he started out as a painter. Closely allied to this, Martin filmed examples of Vogel’s artworks in action, with the artist explaining his creative and technical approaches. Martin examined the context in which Vogel worked and his role in sound art history through an interview with Professor De La Motte, a leading German academic in the field. He explored aspects of sound theory and philosophy, including the roles played by interaction, chance and causality, and the practice (which can be termed the ‘aestheticisation of technology’) of showing the electronic circuitry in the artworks themselves.

In addition to the DVD, a comprehensive website devoted to Vogel’s work includes exhibition details, published essays and examination of key works.

Continuization Loop - installation by Wim Janssen

In 'Continuization Loop', a single 35mm film loop is pulled up and down over more than 150 guiding wheels, creating a wall of film. The frames of this piece of film are only black or transparent. When the loop travels through the mechanism, the image of video static appears.

While film as a medium normally makes images appear through projection in combination with the transport of celluloid through a projector, Continuization Loop omits the projection and makes the image appear by means of the transport only.

The installation combines and imitates visual elements from three generations of visual media: the material aspect of film, the empty signal of video and the binary logic of digital. But at the same time the most important attributes of these media are absent: there is no construction of an illusory filmspace, there is no real video image and there are no computers involved.

Canon says the sensor in the camera allows it to shoot Full HD video while subjects are illuminated with less than 0.0005 lux. To put that in perspective, full moon on a clear night is about 0.27 to 1.0 lux, and 0.0001 lux is a moonless, overcast night.
